The Destruction of Sodom: What We Have Learned from Tall el-Hammam and Its Neighbors, by Phillip J Silvia

"A most interesting read and a compelling empirically-based hypothesis that, more convincingly than previous attempts, brings biblical accounts into accord with modern scientifically-derived understanding of the cosmos. If supported by subsequent and exhaustive research, this is not only ground-breaking archaeology but a cautionary narrative for present and future generations. The fate of Tall el-Hammam/Sodom and its impressive, if unheralded, Jordan Valley Middle Bronze Age civilization will eventually be repeated. It's not a matter of 'if' but 'when'." -- Malcolm A. LeCompte, Ph.D., retired Associate Professor and former Research Director, Center of Excellence in Remote Sensing Education and Research, Elizabeth City State University, Elizabeth City, NC, and cosmic impact researcher.

About the Author
Dr. Phillip J. Silvia is field archaeologist and supervisor with the Tall el-Hammam Excavation Project in Jordan. With a degree in Electrical Engineering from Northeastern University (Boston, MA), a Master of Divinity from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary (South Hamilton, MA), and over 40 years of experience in engineering, software development, project management, and pastoral ministry, Phil brought a unique perspective to his pursuit of a Ph.D. in Archaeology and Biblical History at Trinity Southwest University (Albuquerque, NM), focusing on the Middle Bronze Age civilization-ending destruction of the Middle Ghor, the event that destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah and the cities of the Jordan Valley plain north of the Dead Sea. This book, The Destruction of Sodom: What We Have Learned from Tall el-Hammam and Its Neighbors, presents the fascinating results of his dissertation research in an easy-to-read format that will undoubtedly add to the ongoing dialog concerning this ancient city.

Ever wonder just HOW God did something?
By Donald E. Shannon
Full disclosure - Phil and I are friends and I have followed his progress on the digs over the years. This is a definitive work on the subject of Sodom and the likely cause for its destruction. Phil's approach is both biblical and scientific - something that is somehow more believable than simply scientific. I heard the story of Sodom and Gomorra in Sunday School, and I read it in the Bible. Now we see the physical evidence of Sodom and its destruction in a cataclysmic event. Dr. Silvia not only walks us through the process of how we know this is Sodom, how it was destroyed and why the region lay fallow for some 700 years after the fact. A good read for all.

God does not do magic tricks
By Peter A. Silvia
Full disclosure: Phil is my brother. This well-documented book shows the benefit of taking a look at biblical phenomena through the lens of science. No that is not a contradiction: God does not have to resort to magic tricks to make things happen in our version of reality. Phil's technical skills and contacts led him to connect the archaeological dots in a way that shows clearly an entirely rational explanation of the destruction of Sodom through ordinary, though thankfully rare (within the span of a human lifetime), natural events. Religious interpretation of these events is only lightly touched upon in this book.

This book is the newest and best about the subject
By Veli Voipio
I've started to read this book although I've know already quite a lot about this Tall al-Hammam project. This book is the newest and best about the subject. One thing I would like to see is the dating of the glass (melt rock) itself scientifically, maybe using some paleomagnetic method.
