An excellent summary

Berkhof's manual is an excellent summary of Reformed Christian doctrine, kind of a "systematic theology lite". He draws from the theology of Calvin and Turretin to give a comprehensive yet very usable overview of the historic faith.

Good Introduction to Reformed Theology

For those looking for an introductory textbook on Reformed theology this book is a good place to start. Berkhof goes over the major evangelical themes in systematic theology (Theology Proper, Anthropology, Christology, Pneumatology, Soteriology, Ecclesiology, and Eschatology). However, he also adds a Reformed slant to it by discussing issues like predestination and covenant. As someone who is outside of the Reformed tradition but holds to the basic tenents of Calvinism, there are more agreements than disagreements with the book. I would highly recommend this book to laypeople and Bible study teachers. It is essentially a condensation of Berkhof's Systematic Theology textbook (removing all the details and difficult terms). Overall, a good introductory book on Reformed theology for laypeople and students.

Great Doctirnal Overview!

This is probably one of the best books to have as a Christian taking seminary classes. I use this book all the time. Berkhof shows a book with simple descriptions of the doctrines in Christianity and several review questions at the end of each section. It is a must have for any Christian because it because gives you all the Biblical passages for all the Christian beliefs. AMEN!

A Husband is a Terrible Thing to Waste

At first blush you might be tempted to just categorize this book as an anthology of snarky greeting cards. You know, the ones with a vintage drawing of some sort and then a snarky caption. Well, the bits in the book are similar in style, but they are a good deal more clever and edgy than that.

The history here is fascinating. Ladybird Book's publisher was founded in England in 1867; they began publishing children's books as Ladybird books in 1914, and achieved remarkable success. In 2015 Ladybird began to publish "Ladybird Books for Grownups", which are parodies of the children's books that follow the style, artwork and layout of the children's books but address such topics as hangovers, mindfulness, dating, and the like. The "Fireside Grown-Up Guides" are now being published in the U.S. by Simon & Schuster, and are fairly faithful adaptions, (e.g. the book of "Mum" is now the book of "Mom", and so on), that are quite amusing even if you aren't familiar with the Ladybird style they parody.

Either way you can find them, as Ladybirds or as Fireside Grown-Up Guides, these books are a hoot. My first book was the Guide to "the Mom", and it was clever, edgy, funny, and just a bit pointed. Other Guides I've seen are a little broader in their approach, but still tip a few sacred cows. This one addresses Husbands, and struck me as about half predictable and half oddly insightful. These authors, (who are television comedy writers in their slightly more "real" lives), have mastered the exaggerated-but-true approach to humor, and their pithy little observations about that fellow snoring on the couch are likely to raise a smile.

So, a cheerful bit of parody fun and a nice find. (Please note that I received a free advance will-self-destruct-in-x-days Adobe Digital copy of this book in exchange for a candid review. Apart from that I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.)

Got this book for my fiancee so she can get excited about camping (she says she hates the outdoors, but I don't believe her). Book gives lots of advice/tips on how to make camping a date and is not just a kamasutra type book.

A must for camping couples

This book isn't just about sex but certainly doesn't shy away from it either. It's far more about getting a reluctant partner out camping and hiking and then how to improve the odds of having romantic interludes. After that, it tells you how to plan a trip, how to get along while you are out there, how to keep clean, how to have romantic dinners and then tells you all the lovely ways of making sex possible that are only available outdoors.

The book is well written, witty and has great stories. Some stories were simply beautiful and brought a tear to my eye and some were laugh out loud funny. I especially liked "Nice Ways to Say You Stink" and the entire chapter on having sex in a canoe. There is one especially sexy story about toasting marshmallows on an open fire that I had to read twice. The illustrations by Ann Miya were a hoot and added a lot of ambiance to the book.

On top of this, there are useful information sections with recipes, romantic locations and an extensive list of on line resources.

My only real gripe is in the layout, where a large aside, taking up a page or two, can go right in the middle of a sentence. It can interrupt the flow, but is a minor point in the middle of a book with so much to offer.

This is a must for couples who like camping and hiking, but even more so for a member of a couple whose partner is resistant to the idea of camping. It suits any level, from hard core to car campers only. I can't recommend it enough for people who just want a little more spice in their life and are wondering how.

Fun to read, camper or no...

I'll admit it, I'm hardly a camper. But out of sheer curiosity I picked up this book, and have been enjoying my way through it. The writing style is fun and light, and the personal anecdotes (from the author and others) are highly amusing. Thoroughly readable, and certainly recommended (and as I said, I'm not even a camper).

About the Author
Stephanie Arnold received her B.A. degree in English from Stanford University and then continued her studies at the University of Wisconsin where she received an M.F.A. degree in directing and a Ph.D. in dramatic literature and theory. Before joining the Lewis & Clark College faculty in 1986, she taught at Mills College and the University of California, Riverside.

Stephanie Arnold teaches acting, directing, and dramatic literature including a special topics course in Latino Theatre. The productions she has directed include works by classical and contemporary playwrights as well as musicals and opera. She is currently at work on the fifth edition of her textbook, The Creative Spirit: An Introduction to Theatre, which is published by McGraw-Hill and in use at colleges and universities around the country. She has recently returned from leading the Lewis & Clark College off campus study program to New York City.

Excellent Text for Introduction to Theater

THE CREATIVE SPIRIT takes a very refreshing, multicultural view to American Theater, while still giving good, basic information about theater history and the process of theater production. This text was written to accompany introductory theater courses, (perhaps in community colleges or in a theater for non-majors context), not to try to be a definitive guide to all theater. Hence, the subtitle "An Introduction to Theatre."
Reading plays is a huge part of learning about theater, and this text includes many plays for analysis and discussion. The plays included are each unique and important, reflecting the diverse experience of the people of the United States (and probably the students who are reading them), while still teaching the same concepts as if they were reading the plays that most intro textbooks offer. Each play is preceded by contextual information including an author biography, the artistic and cultural influences that contributed to the inspiration of the writing, information about a production of the play, etc.
There are individual chapters about the role of each theater practicioner (director, designer, actor, etc.) which include interviews with professionals who discuss their craft.
New to recent editions is the addition of an entire chapter about musical theater. An important part of American theater, recent and historical musical productions are discussed.
The text is richly illustrated, with many color plates, black and white photos and drawings. Photos of Broadway, regional and college productions are included, as well as historically important people and places.
In addition, the final chapter of the text (at least in the last edition, I have not seen the most recent edition) includes a number or project ideas for students to become the producers of a show, choosing directorial concepts, set and costume designs, etc. At the end of each of the other chapters are suggested discussion questions for that chapter's content as well.
Many of us practicing theater today could even benefit from reviewing some of the basic information in this book, or expanding our knowledge of what's out there by reading about and seeing photos from varied regional productions.
In my mind, THE CREATIVE SPIRIT: AN INTRODUCTION TO THEATRE is an excellent book for what it aims to be.

Not the Best Overview for Theatre

I used this textbook for my last section of Theatre Appreciation, and it did not work out well, for two reasons:

1. The emphasis is overwhelmingly on modern American theatre, and the roots of theatrical history are almost entirely neglected. Only very brief details are given for most historical movements and playwrights, and even earlier American plays are not given the time and detail they should be. I found myself having to supplement the text to an extreme degree, for it just didn't include enough substance.

2. Not enough is done to show the technical workings of the theatre. Students may already come into the class with a preconceived idea that theatre is all about the actor (and perhaps the director), and if they read this book from cover to cover, they may very well believe their first ideas are right (except for that chapter on playwriting). Technicians and other aspects of theatrical production are given so little time that students without theatrical experience may very well believe they are unimportant--and yet this idea neglects what makes theatre so amazing, that so many artists bring their talents together to create a cohesive whole, with costumes, sets, lighting, props, etc. This book simply doesn't show students those aspects enough for them to see how they can all work together.

I am teaching another section of Theatre Appreciation, and I will not use this textbook again. I selected it the first time because it included the full scripts for five plays, but even these are not worth the gaping holes in the rest of the textbook's material.

I have given this book careful review, and as a professor of English can attest to its positive aspects and qualities. This anthology is a thorough treatment and coverage of the subjects, is quite scholarly, and competently blends both literary theory and historical perspectives. The book is well-conceived and planned, offering essentials on the overall theme of gender as well as the many interrelated subtopics such as sexuality, ethnicity, class, and race. I could see this anthology used not just in a literature course but one in cultural studies, sociology, or even history. The book encourages engagement with the selected texts as well as class discussion and writing assignments. Loved most of the literature

Interesting food for though. Loved most of the literature. Some of the poetry did not appeal to me but overall would recommend. I used this book for a perspectives on gender course.
