The book is, instead, an apologia for many Catholic traditions-the denial of ordinations to women, a celibate clergy, etc.-and addresses the reform issues that currently fracture the Catholic Church. Protestants, in fact, may be offended by Johnson's frequent reference to them as "separated Christians," a pre-Vatican II term that implies that Catholicism bears no responsibility for Christian disunity. Johnson offers lucid-and downright chatty-explanations of a dizzying array of customs and beliefs, ably demonstrating why diocesan newspapers across the country have picked up his column, "Sign of Faith." This volume will likely appeal most to those same readers.

Art historian Johnson here spews out numerous facts and even more numerous-and suspect-opinions on Catholic faith, worship, culture, and customs. Unfortunately, he either over- or underexplains his information, shifting between the interests of Catholics and curious non-Catholics and satisfying neither. Even marginally informed readers will feel compelled to question his sweeping generalizations. On style of worship, for example: If you come from Italy, Ireland, or Spain, you prefer the visual; from England, northern Germany, or Scandinavia, you prefer words and music. On priestly celibacy: "There's never been much call to allow priests of the Latin Rite to marry." Equally irritating are countless non sequiturs, sloppy editing, and an idiosyncratic bibliography in which a German text is recommended with the qualifier "Only kidding." Misleading, contradictory, inappropriately irreverent, and not recommended.

The range of Johnson's content could have been extravagantly insufficient. Most theologians would not have attempted such a juxtaposition of sublime theology and simple devotionsat least in the space of approximately 300 pages. But this little Catholic encyclopedia reminds us that the average reader has questions and interests that academics may overlook. It also reminds us that Catholicism is a mixed bag of intellect and imagination, of doctrines and practices, of personalities and popes. For example, Johnson manages to fit the visions of St. Catherine Laboure, a simple French sister, into his context. Johnson is an art historian, and it is interesting to have that kind of perspective when describing Catholicism; his principal headings (faith, worship, culture, customs) keep the ark orderly. Solidified My Decision to Join the Church

During the late 90's, I was investigating a number of Christian faiths. For many years I was bouncing around from Protestant church to Protestant church with no real clue as to what I was looking for. Becoming Catholic never entered my mind. Eventually I ran into a Catholic friend who explained a few of the basics of the Church to me. Intrigued, I began to study on my own and found "Why Do Catholics Do That?" The title seemed straightforward enough, so I picked up the book and read it from cover to cover. It was amazing. Kevin Orlin Johnson's book answered all of my major questions about the Church and most of my minor questions. I had read a number of other books up to that point and none of them gave me answers as honestly or inoffensively as this one. It didn't try to hammer anything down my throat. Instead, it gave me answers in plain English and with no intent to brush me off as "just another Protestant." After reading the book, I decided to enter the RCIA process, where I entered the Church at Easter in 2000.
I can honestly say that this book was the decision maker for me. It is written in a way that isn't too "bookish" or intellectual for the casual reader, yet has a good amount of information in it. The writing style used, which has a lot of humor in it, lessened the blows of what some consider "cocky Catholicism." Another reviewer felt that in her original review this book came across as too cocky. I understand what she is talking about. I've met quite a few people with that cocky attitude. That attitude was one of the major things that turned me off from the Church originally. This book to me, however, wasn't too cocky. I enjoyed it. It gave the reader information in a straight manner. I also found nothing anti-Semitic about this book, as another reviewer mentions.
With this book, I learned that a number of the things that I was taught as a child about the Catholic Church was mere propaganda or, in most cases, misinformation. A lot of what I thought I knew about the Church was actually a misunderstanding of practices and beliefs.
I believe this book, with its simplicity, could easily challenge some of the harder hitting Protestant theories about the Catholic faith. Although it doesn't really go into any major theological arguments, it openly explains why Catholics do the things they do. It's hard to argue with someone when they are straightforward and honest with their beliefs. Perhaps that's what we need a little more of in the world today.

My Favorite Catholic Background Book

This is my favorite "Why do Catholics" book, and I have read quite a few, as I was raised Catholic and had to learn to defend my beliefs when my parents moved to the Bible belt in my late teens. If I had known about this book then, my life would have been much easier.

Dr. Johnson's book is much more entertaining and thorough than work of a similar nature, such as Karl Keating's better known books. Dr. Johnson converses with the reader, which makes the writing style engaging and memorable; he does not say use the dry approach of "some people think this," but rather uses and approach of "We Catholics believe." He does not discuss beliefs of other religions, except when comparing the different approach used for compilations of scriptures. This makes me more comfortable in recommending to books to other Christians, unlike Keating's work, in which the terms used sometimes appeal slanderous to people from denominations such as Mormons and Jehovah's Witnesses.

This is a book of Catholic practices and religious beliefs and explores illustrates from where they came. It does not address moral theology, but is more concerned with issues such as "why does the Old Testament comprise these books," "why is there a Pope," "what is the official stances on alleged apparitions," "what is the roles of saints," ect. But is also has fun tid bits of information that many Catholic information guides fail to address, like the use of incense, the dress of clergy, and terms used for the religious. It also explains popular devotions and their history; such as The Way of the Cross and the rosary.

Amazon recommended it to me for some time. I wish I bought it sooner, but I thought that it looked too basic to be a wise investment for me. Then some one gave me a gift certificate for Christmas and this book was at the store; I flipped though it and found so much entertaining trivia, that I purchased it on the spot- wishing I had listened to Amazon sooner.

I have since given them as gifts to people who wanted to learn more about Catholicism, and contrary to a few opinions expressed form other reviews here, they did not find the book offensive, but appreciated it. I highly recommend it. The broad range of information it contains makes it an ideal reference for the uninitiated and curious, as well as for the person who has had much experience and education in Catholicism seeking to fill in any gaps of knowledge.

Uncritical in Approach, but Still Solid

This helpful book is authored by Kevin Orlin Johnson, a PhD in art history. He has a firm grasp on church history and on topics like art and culture and he does a good job explaining many of the Roman Catholic customs and practices that often confuse those who aren't Catholic (not to mention many Catholics themselves!). He does use a rather uncritical approach, however, so his book will be especially beneficial to those who prefer a more conservative view of the issues he covers (such as sacraments, funerals, popes, ordained ministry, monasticism, vestments, holy objects, etc.). For those who lean toward a more progressive stance on many of these issues, this book will probably not be suitable. For them, I recommend an approach such as that of Greg Dues in CATHOLIC CUSTOMS AND TRADITIONS: A POPULAR GUIDE (also available on Amazon). Catholicism is a religion that is much more pluriform and rich than many are willing to admit. Indeed, the various approaches of different authors are probably a sign of the church's continuing relevance today. This review may not be received positively by some persons, but as a professional religious educator and a life-long Roman Catholic, I think we honor Christ and the church when we admit our differences without marginalizing or excluding one another. Kindle's a good compromise

I skimmed through the 21st version and really liked the content i read so i searched for a paper copy but found this as a more cost effective option. IF you are in the USA this book is nearly imposible to get a print version (above $80.) All the sites that sell it at a reasonable price ($8-9) are based in India and don't ship here. $20 for kindle version wasn't too bad. The content is very comprehensive the first 60-80 pages are just anatomy and physiology which reads really slow but once you get into the disease sections it is very well written, concise, and helpful. I enjoy picking this up because it's written at the level a third year medical student level where you know 75-80% of the medical terminology. It does a good balance between allowing you to communicate disease processes to patients and to colleagues. I really enjoyed many of the reiterations of simple concepts throughout multiple chapters allowing the big picture to develop and leaving friendly reminders of what is important to know in ophthalmology.

The cons of this book: tables are a nightmare at converting (this could be an app dependant thing i use an iPad with the kindle app) they constantly only show half of the table and when i try to slide to the other half of the table it flips the page...that cost this great book a star.
It also isn't very picture heavy (scant on abnormal images of fundus or pathology)

US med students- too in-depth unless you want to look like a rockstar on an AI
Foreign Grads- from what i understand this is the standard textbook that you guys use.

I think I have read this book four times.

This book kicks butt. I have been digging around every year for the best Christmas stuff and studies on the Incarnation. I love Christmas hymns, and Dickens' Christmas Carol is remarkable. But if you want some sermon-stories so that you can just seize a few minutes to think about Jesus, Boreham is the man to go to.

- The stories are so fun that they are worth reading any time of the year.
- They are not really sermons or Bible studies per se. Boreham was a preacher but his writing is quite leisurely. Perfect for Christmas and family time.
- He captures Christmas. In not all, but many of these quick essays, he talks about the meaning and function of the Incarnation in a way that will blow your stockings off.

Ravi Zacharias was right—Boreham was not really a profound "preacher", in terms of expository study and all that. But to F. W. Boreham, everything preached. I have read essays on wet paint, village grass, and dominos, and I have never been disappointed. He will lead you to the feet of Jesus over and over if you take some time for his books. My Christmas Book is among the best examples, and Billy Graham recommended buying and reading everything that Boreham had written.

I find myself pulling this book from my shell, not only during the Christmas season, but all year long. No one writes like Boreham. His story on "How Christmas Came to Roaring Camp" is one of my all-time favorite essays. His introduction is also something that should not be missed. Leave it to FWB to encapsulate in a few sentences what so many of us struggle to express in paragraphs! I am purchasing multiple copies to give away as presents this holiday season.

AME Group's book, PMP Exam Practice Questions and Solutions, was key in my passing the PMP exam on the first attempt and by a substantial margin! I think this book is 'must have' study material. AME Group's (Aileen's) questions and explanations of Best and Wrong answers accelerated the process of understanding content and the inter-relationships of the project management processes. I also used Rita Mulcahy's PMP Exam Prep which had some very helpful information that can't be found in the PMBOK guide. However, I found Aileen's questions and solutions to be more representative of the exam than Rita's and much easier to digest. --R. Trojan

Going through Aileen Ellis' AME Group PMP Exam Prep Class and using her PMP Exam Practice Questions and Solutions book was key in my passing the exam on the first try and receiving my PMP Credential. I have looked at several other PMP Exam Prep books and sets of Exam Prep Questions but none of them held up to AME Group's approach. Aileen's catch phrase ;Why the best answer is best and the wrong answers are wrong; accurately describes how she has carefully engineered a learning system that allows the PMP (or CAPM) candidate to place the myriad facts; Knowledge Areas; Process Groups; Inputs, Tools and Techniques, and Outputs; and the PMI Mindset; into an understandable context that greatly facilitates absorbing the PMBOK and thus being able to pass the exam. And, her questions were much more in line with what I saw in my exam than other sets of questions I have seen. In addition to using AME Group's PMP Exam Practice Questions and Solutions book, those fortunate enough to also attend Aileen's PMP (or CAPM) Prep Classes as I did will also benefit from her ability to relate what's in the PMBOK to actual Project Management - sort of a two for the price of one; benefit that also contributes to the very impressive;Pass Rate; enjoyed by her students. The Exam Question Strategy and the Types of Questions; detailed in the front of the book were worth the price of the book. The book also provides hundreds of questions and answers similar to other exam preparation books. This book, unlike many others, explains why incorrect answers are wrong and provides references directing the reader to additional sources if needed or desired. This book is an excellent way to review and prepare for the Project Management Institute (PMI) � Project Management Professional (PMP) � exam. --Jasson Williams

Less than my expectations for taking an expensive test.

In virtually all professional testing I have done in 40 years of engineering, flying, and professional development, when I have paid this much for a book of test questions, I have an expectation of some of these questions showing up on the actual test. The material in the PMP course is extremely detailed. This practice test book test depth was not nearly detailed enough to prepare for the PMP test. I thought I was prepared by understanding these questions. That was not true. I don't like being negative. But I like even less being led to believe that I was preparing correctly for this expensive test.

Not the greatest but useful.

Nothing wrong with this book. However if you want test questions then I would use the website [...] The reason this is a better option is that it simulates the actual question of the test and gives you PDU's to boot. I found this book really did not help me for the test as much as I wanted it too. I would recommend it a tool to help you study but as a test prep tool not so much. Stick with the InSite test banks prior to your test and you will be fine!
