The Reckless Decade: America in the 1890s, by H.W. Brands

"Large-scale economic change, job uncertainty, the politics of extremism and paranoia, arguments over America's international role, racial conflicts. Sound familiar?"(Fritz Lanham, Houston Chronicle) Just as we do today, Americans of the 1890s faced changes in economics, politics, society, and technology that led to wrenching and sometimes violent tensions between rich and poor, capital and labor, white and black, East and West. In The Reckless Decade, H. W. Brands demonstrates that we can learn a lot about the contradictions that lie at the heart of America today by looking at them through the lens of the 1890s.

The 1890s saw the closing of the American frontier and a shift toward imperialist ambitions. Populists and muckrakers grappled with robber barons and gold-bugs. Americans addressed the unfinished business of Reconstruction by separating blacks and whites. Booker T. Washington, W. E. B. Du Bois, and other black leaders clashed over the proper response to continuing racial inequality. Those on top of the economic heap—Rockefeller, Carnegie, and Morgan—created vast empires of wealth, while those at the bottom worked for dimes a day. Brands brings all this to life in a vivid narrative filled with larger-than-life characters facing momentous challenges as they worked toward an uncertain future.

From Publishers Weekly
The decade of the 1890s is quite compelling; it represents the high flowering of an older, quaint America together with social, political, and intellectual trends that would move the nation rapidly into the modernity familiar to us today. Brands (history, Texas A&M) has produced a workmanlike survey of the period, concentrating on traditional economic and political topics. The familiar emphases include labor strife, slum life, the robber barons, and the Spanish-American War. Readability (and research value) would have been enhanced by greater concern for intellectual and social issues. Emergent communication and transportation technologies, the purity and temperance movements, and the changes in popular entertainment are valid scholarly topics that would have added interest. Brands's book will be useful as a term-paper source but will probably not attract many general readers.

From Booklist
History doesn't repeat itself but rather presents similar patterns, and Brands detects several areas of continuity between fin de siecle American anxiety and the current angst of this millennium's expiring decade. To author Henry Adams, the country in the 1890s was deteriorating into a miasma of ailments; contemporary pessimists have their own list of societal complaints. The national obsession, race, bubbles in categories recognizably analogous to the Booker T. Washington-W. E. B. Du Bois debate, pitting economic self-improvement against vigorous assertion of rights. Immigration was and is a volatile issue. And current problems of foreign policy have detectable antecedents in the "splendid little war" with Spain. Were these topics intractable or unresolvable, no reformers would ever come forth, but in the 1890s they appeared in force, boosted by the 1893 depression. Reform built up to Bryan's famous "cross of gold" speech; yet Brands fastens on lesser known but equally colorful characters like Jacob Coxey, who led the first march-on-Washington protest to press labor's demands against the decade's powerful magnates, such as Carnegie. An insightful survey of an interesting decade. Gilbert Taylor

Review
"Large-scale economic change, job uncertainty, the politics of extremism and paranoia, arguments over America's international role, racial conflicts. Sound familiar?" (Fritz Lanham, Houston Chronicle) "Beautifully written and wonderfully absorbing, The Reckless Decade is the most accessible survey history of America's turbulent 1890s ever composed." - Douglas Brinkley "Brands injects a needed dose of reality into the sunnier images of the era of Lillian Russell and Diamond Jim Brady." - Jules Wagman. The Plain Dealer "A first-rate overview of an age that, Brands correctly believes, has specific meaning for our own....[1]n The Reckless Decade the story, not the storyteller, is at the center, which is as it should be. Brands knows how to write narrative and how to make the complex comprehensible." - Jonathan Yardley, Washington Post Book World

A Wealth of Knowledge
By A Customer
After the Civil War and Reconstruction, America was witnessing revolutions in every field. Not only in industry were there innovations, but in politics, economy, and society as well. These changes, including the emergence of multi-millionaires like Carnegie, Rockefeller, and Morgan, labor unions, and the fight for free silver, continued well into the final decade of the 19th century. The 1890's was a time of unrest in America with corrupt politicians, an agrarian downturn, and other problems. H.W. Brands tries to get a hold of this turbulent age in The Reckless Decade: America in the 1890's.
Brands' objective in this work is to illustrate the rich history of the "reckless decade," while at the same time drawing parallels to the modern day. His introduction serves as a reminder of this goal. In it, he compares the end of the 19th century to the end of the 20th century. Both periods felt the "brink of a new era... most pronounced in America's cities." The cities in both eras helped reshape the economy. Brands notes that the politics of both decades were entrenched in fear and weariness. Those of the 1890's feared the change of the lives of the farmers with industrialization, while those of the 1990's feared a "ubiquitous, iniquitous liberalism." These comparisons are offered in the introduction, but not given directly in the book.
Brands covers a startlingly broad selection of events in such a narrow timeframe of history. The competition between the business juggernauts, Carnegie, Rockefeller, and Morgan is presented in almost a narrative form, making a mundane matter of economics interesting. Brands spends a chapter discusses the "other half" of society, in distinct contrast with the aforementioned business magnates. He alludes to the work of journalist, Jacob Riis, in how immigrants managed to get by in the slums of New York. Much of the chapter is taken directly from Riis' gloomy portrayal of the ramshackle apartments. Brands discusses in depth the Spanish-American War, Jim Crow laws and segregation, and the national frenzy over gold and silver. One of the more interesting parts of the book was a retelling of the Homestead Strike of 1892. Brands depicts the event as having "the atmosphere a circus. (The better educated of the Pinkertons might have thought of a Roman circus with themselves as Christians and the strikers as the lions.)" The scope of the book misses very little: educational reform may be the only theme untouched in The Reckless Decade.
The book is written in a very approachable style. Brands is, at times, captivating in his narration of events. Unfortunately, the reading is also slow at some points. The author should be applauded, however, for his extensive research, as the material is exhaustive. The Reckless Decade encapsulates ten years of history in a mere 350 pages.

A Perfect Ten
By Bruce Loveitt
H.W. Brands is one of our best popular historians, and he doesn't disappoint with this book about America in the 1890's. He starts the book with two tales that demonstrate the closing of the frontier- the final major land rush in the Oklahoma Territory, which occurred in 1893; and the fighting at Wounded Knee, in the Dakota Territory, in December 1890, which resulted in the deaths of Sitting Bull and many women and children (noncombatants) at the hands of U.S. Army cavalry troops. The Sioux Indians were left demoralized by this event. Professor Brands grabs our attention with the first sentence of the book: "Fred Sutton had watched the earlier rushes into Oklahoma; he had seen friends no smarter, tougher, or more discerning than himself grab homesteads; and when word came that the government in Washington was going to open up the Cherokee Strip to settlement, he determined that this time he'd get a piece of the action." Later on in the chapter, the author switches from the concrete to the philosophical, telling us what thinkers such as Frederick Jackson Turner and Henry and Brooks Adams had to say about the significance of the closing of the frontier. This balance, in addition to the gripping narrative style, is what makes Professor Brands such a good writer. The book is just plain fun to read, but it is also intellectually challenging. Later chapters deal with the growth and centralization of big business (Carnegie and Rockefeller); the importance of the financier (J.P. Morgan); the urban, immigrant poor and the role of the political machines (Tammany Hall); economic downturn and the plight of farmers; racial discrimination and the different philosophies of Black American leaders on how to improve the lives of Black Americans (Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. DuBois); the political battle over the Gold Standard vs. bimetallism (the Populist party, William Jennings Bryan); and the exercise of American power abroad (the Spanish-American War and Theodore Roosevelt). Professor Brands wrote this book in the mid-1990's and he points out some parallels between the two decades- the most obvious being the tendency of people to begin looking outside the political mainstream during periods of great economic uncertainty. During the 1890's people felt under stress from industrialization, economic centralization and also from the severe depression the country was going through. Americans in the 1990's felt the heat of global competition and the uncertainties involved in the ongoing transition from a manufacturing to a more service based economy. The author gently points out some similarities. He wisely doesn't take the analogy too far. As you can see, the book is brimming over with topics and ideas, but it is always a joy to read- not least because of the many fascinating characters who are portrayed. In the section on the rise of big business, Professor Brands entertains us with the story of the competition between Thomas Edison and George Westinghouse. Westinghouse originally made his fortune by inventing the railway air brake. When he decided to branch out into electricity, Edison wasn't amused. He muttered to a colleague, "Tell Westinghouse to stick to air brakes." Edison was working on commercializing direct current, while Westinghouse favored alternating current (which uses higher voltages). To try to influence public opinion, Edison had his technicians wire up stray cats and dogs to the higher voltages and switched on the current. Edison put out pamphlets implying that alternating current would do the same thing to people that it did to the unfortunate animals. And when Westinghouse got the contract to provide the electricity for New York State's "electric chairs," Edison remarked that prisoners could now either be hanged or they could be "Westinghoused." So, apparently "The Wizard Of Menlo Park" didn't spend all of his time inventing. He had a few moments left over to engage in some below-the-belt boxing!

Very readable history
By A Customer
"The Reckless Decade" is a very readable synthesis of biography, social history, intellectual history, and just good old-fashioned storytelling art. Brands's writing style is electric, his wit sharp, and his discretion as to when to use well-chosen quotations and when to render his own pithy judgments seldom erring.
A thoroughly enjoyable period history of a time very much like our own.

Review
“Inspiring in its straightforwardness and sincerity . . . I don't think it would be possible to read Goodbye, Things without taking a look at your own home (and life) with a new set of eyes. . . . In the end, what matters is the thoughtfulness the book inspires.” (Janel Laban - Apartment Therapy)

“In his new book, Goodbye, Things, Fumio Sasaki shares the lessons he learned by going minimalist. . . . For Sasaki, minimalism isn't about how little you have, but how it makes you feel. Sasaki credits his minimalist lifestyle with helping him lose weight, become extroverted and proactive, and above all, feel happy and grateful for what he has.” (Heeseung Kim - Cosmopolitan)

“Makes the case for radical minimalism . . . treat each of [Sasaki's] 70 tips as an opportunity to reevaluate how you use and why you keep the things in your home.” (Jenny Xie - Curbed)

“Take your spring cleaning to the next level with Goodbye, Things by Fumio Sasaki. A best-seller in Japan, this book uncovers why we want to own more than we need, what this mentality does to our well-being and how we can live better by owning less.” (Katie Neal - Parade)

“If you’ve ever felt bogged down by all of the things filling your life up with clutter then this is the book for you.” (C.A. - The Daily Want)

“In a time of rampant consumerism, a new movement is preaching an alternative path ― one that banishes all but the most fundamental and enriching consumer products from our lives. In Goodbye, Things, Fumio Sasaki recounts his conversion from reckless hoarder to hyper-mindful consumer, and offers advice to those seeking the same simple happiness that he found in minimalism.” (Gear Patrol)

An Introduction to Minimalist Living that Changed My Life
By Coco
Having consulted countless self-help books written by gurus who appear to have it all figured out, “Goodbye, Things” was a breath of fresh air to me. Fumio Sasaki’s tone is quiet, contemplative, open-minded, and above all, humble. I easily identified with his description of how he used to be: constantly making myself miserable by comparing myself to others; berating myself for not keeping up with household chores; spending way too much time on internet research to buy something, only to never get much use out of that item. And if a self-proclaimed “regular guy” like him could go from being a depressed shop-a-holic living in a dark, messy apartment to waking up with the sun every morning feeling happy and grateful, I couldn’t see any reason not to give this minimalism thing a try myself.

When I discovered the Japanese version of this book over a year ago, my husband and I had already downsized quite a bit after reading Marie Kondo’s “Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up.” But reading “Goodbye, Things” has had even more of a dramatic impact on our lives, mainly because it made us think fundamentally about how we use, and why we keep, certain things. Our priority went from “living in a nice apartment full of things we love” to “minimizing our footprint to maximize our time and freedom.” We used to talk about buying a condo someday; now the idea of taking out a mortgage or being tied down to a place does not sound appealing to us at all. We used to tell each other we should entertain guests more often; now we realize that was only because our friends like to host dinner parties, and we felt guilty for not reciprocating. We have accepted that the number of things we can realistically take care of are much, much smaller than we once thought.

“Goodbye, Things” also helped us let go of items that sparked joy but we weren’t actually using or taking good care of. I really resonated with Sasaki’s observation of the “Silent To-Do List”: the more objects we have in our surroundings, the more they contribute to our already overwhelmed sensory load, and the more time and energy they take up. My husband and I used to have three bookshelves full of our favorite books, but now we only keep a handful that we are actually reading. We also let go of our long-owned musical instruments, after we finally came to terms with the fact that playing them just was not our passion or priority anymore. As difficult as this was, now it feels as though a huge weight has been lifted off our shoulders.

Overall, I found this book to be a very helpful and inspiring introduction to minimalism, and for my husband and me, it really did change our lives.

Gentle and Inspiring
By Patricia Brogan
At first I wasn't sure about this book. "Great," I thought, "another single, male, Fight-Club-quoting, Steve-Jobs-idolizing minimalist is here to tell us how superior he is for reducing his life to a mattress and a MacBook." I wasn't far off in some ways, but before long the author's openness and lack of pretension had completely won me over.

The first part of the book is practical advice, and though he includes references to minimalist friends with spouses, hobbies, and children, it's mostly oriented toward people like himself. (The advice is still pretty good). For me the best part of the book was the second half, where he talked at length about the changes minimalism had made in his inner life. I found myself nodding in along as he talked about silent to-do lists and the procrastination they cause, the joy of living in the present, and finding value in just being ordinary.

Recommended to anyone who thinks of minimalism as chilly or self-centered, because this book will fill you with warmth.

Not recommended to anyone who is just looking for the perfect manual. That's not what this is trying to be.

Practical guidance and personal reflection - an excellent combination
By Amazon Customer
Does the world need another book on minimalism? Probably not, but I am glad that Fumio Sasaki wrote this one. It's as much a personal memoir as it is a book about adopting a minimalist lifestyle and it is this deeply personal reflection that elevates the book above the sea of others in the "decluttering" genre. His reflections will likely resonate with thoughtful readers and spur them on to simplify their own spaces and lives. The latter section of the book wanders away from the core theme and was the least compelling section for me. The rest is excellent.

The book is also suitable for those who have already begun (or completed) their journey towards minimalism by giving them the opportunity to reflect on their own motivations and progress, and perhaps change course if necessary.

Jefferson vs. Hamilton: Confrontations that Shaped a Nation (Bedford Cultural Editions Series), by Noble E. Cunningham

This documentary study of Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton focuses on their differing views of society and government in the formative years of the new American nation. Interweaving more than 40 documents into 7 chronological chapters, the text follows the lives and careers of the two men from their youth, through the Revolutionary War, to the death of Hamilton in 1804. In each chapter, generous excerpts from their public papers and private letters reveal the two men’s often divergent views on government and the Constitution, economic and foreign policy, and the military, and illustrate the roles they played in the emergence of political parties. Reading Jefferson’s First Inaugural Address, the Report on Public Credit, the Kentucky Resolutions, and a host of other documents, students can explore firsthand the two men’s philosophies and the impact these had on the emerging nation. Also included are 10 illustrations, a Jefferson/Hamilton chronology, a bibliography, and an index.

From Library Journal
This ninth volume in the "Bedford Series in History and Culture" focuses on two adversarial American legends, Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton. As with other works in this series, the format, which combines narrative commentary with primary documents, emphasizes brevity. In a succinct narrative that composes less than half the volume, Cunningham (emeritus, history, Univ. of Missouri, Columbia) once again demonstrates his considerable skill as historian and writer. Numerous key letters, speeches, reports, and other primary documents interwoven into the text illustrate fundamental differences between the democrat from an established family and the equally talented social outsider with an even sharper entrepreneur's eye. The "Bedford" series is aimed at college American history courses, and this latest volume will be useful in that setting. It will also appeal to general readers who want mini-biographies and samples of the written works of these two American political giants.DWilliam D. Pederson, Louisiana State Univ., Shreveport

From Kirkus Reviews
Selections from the writings of two of the foremost antagonists among the Founding Fathers, edited and explained by historian and biographer Cunningham (In Pursuit of Reason, 1987). Cunningham's efforts will forever dispel any romantic notions that the Founding Fathers were a troop of amiable Boy Scouts. The Jefferson and Hamilton on display here are fierce opponents, each absolutely convinced that the other was a danger to the fledgling country. Cunningham has juxtaposed some of the principal writings of both men (most of the pieces are excerpts) and supplied some genial commentary--all intended to reveal how the two leading political figures faced the major issues of their day. Hamilton (younger than Jefferson by 12 years) did not trust the general public: The people are turbulent and changing, he wrote in 1787, they seldom judge or determine right. Jefferson, by contrast, had supreme faith in the electorate and wished to guarantee the survival of liberty by improving the education of the common people. Cunningham reveals that there is no record of the first meeting between the men, but they both were members of Washington's first cabinet--Jefferson was Secretary of State, and Hamilton was Secretary of the Treasury. Their first important clash was over the formation of the national bank (Hamilton favored it--and won). Jefferson hated Hamilton's fondness for paper currency and later wrote Washington that he believed he had been duped by Hamilton and made a tool for forwarding his schemes. Hamilton later called Jefferson a contemptible hypocrite and could not bring himself to credit Jefferson even for Louisiana, whose purchase, sniped Hamilton, was due to fortuitous . . . circumstances rather than any wise or vigorous measure. Cunningham concludes--somewhat superfluously--that both men contributed greatly to the shaping of the American nation. As this useful volume of powerful prose ably illustrates, what often survives a political collision is moral clarity. (10 illustrations) -- Copyright 2000 Kirkus Associates, LP. Review
"Cunningham has composed a well-written, fluid, and engrossing text that covers the major political differences between Jefferson and Hamilton. He has developed a well-defined theme that holds throughout the chapters and one that is very appropriate for an undergraduate audience.... The documents are major strengths; they allow the reader to see Jefferson and Hamilton as real people with real fears and concerns about the world in which they lived."

I purchased this book as a school textbook for one of my history courses. While it is not a book I would choose to read for my leisure time, it is a great resource for those wanting to know more about the early history of America. Cunningham does a great job of comparing and contrasting the lives of Jefferson and Hamilton. He also intertwines their stories into the impact they made on the United States government.

Disappointing
By Debra
Although there are some interesting things here, the choice is somewhat strange and the limited number of papers disappointing. Missing for example, is something from Hamilton's Federalist Papers (which I think most people would consider his most important writing) or Jefferson's Notes on the State of Virginia . Perhaps Cunningham felt these are too well known. However, we then have Jefferson's Inaugural Address and Kentucky Resolutions which are very well known. Most importantly, I would have expected a much greater sampling of original materials considering the volume that are available from both Jefferson and Hamilton.

Jefferson vs. Hamilton
By djwatkins487
Cunningham's selection of essays provides solid examples of the issues prevalent during our nation's founding; the formulation of a national bank, the assumption of war debt, the unintended formation of the two party system, Constitutional interpretation, the French Revolution, foreign diplomacy, and the Louisiana Purchase. Fortunately, Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson were two of the most influential founders, polarizing leaders of the two parties, and were diligent writers. We're provided with solid examples of Hamilton's federalist principles, his distrust of democracy and the masses, and his administrative genius. While Hamilton's character is revealed thoroughly in his writing, Jefferson, I felt, was not as forthcoming. Since this book compiled the works of Jefferson, much of his character and his most important contributions were left unexplored. Jefferson's idealistic vision and purpose of America was not presented through the essays. The most influential of Jefferson's contributions came through his confidence in the people, ideals of equality, and his theory of generational ruling (the county and government belonged to that generation which was living, thus debt and overbearing government must be kept to a minimum). Otherwise, the selected works and the authors narrative guidance did indeed cover "confrontations that shaped a nation." The beauty of this book is that it's short and concise. That being said, I didn't feel background information to be enough for one to fully grasp the scope of the issues. Without any additional knowledge of the founding, I think it would be difficult to appreciate the significance of the confrontations provided in the book.

Good book on Numerology
By Josie R.
I have always been fascinated by numerology and was there something to this science. I sat down recently and started reading this book; with pen and paper in hand. The book walked me through step by step how to calculate the numbers and then give much reference information on how to look up the information and meaning behind the numbers to help formulate a picture for yourself or the person whom the profile is being formulated. I found the book very helpful and informative. It seems to be accurate for the picture it painted of my life these past 9 months. I found one error, when the third challenge is first introduced, it is not explained at all how this number is calculated. It is explained later in the book which then caused me to go back and rework the numbers. This is the only reason it gets 4 stars instead of 5.

Sylvia Abraham was doing numerology readings before Glynnis was born. Not famous, just quietly accurate. If Sylvia wrote it, it's worth reading.

This is NOT A SOLUTIONS MANUAL!
By Milos Ivanovic
This ''Solutions Manual'' doesnt live up to its name. It has only a few problems covered from each chapter and mostly (from what I've seen) the problems are all odd numbered (If you have the Textbook, you already have all odd numbered numerical solutions in it).I was seraching for a complete Solutions Manual and because this is the only one accompaning Matter and Interactions I though it would be just that. My mistake.

Say cure again I dare you!
By Bubz
Oh no please do not say cure, big daddy medicine will come pay you a friendly visit! Remission I love that word.

Sir Ranulph Fiennes, Linda Faulkner, and many others have used one of the substances in this book to 'cure' their arthritis.
Here is something for thought! The Queen of England uses homeopathic doctors instead of allopathic doctors and she is arguably very wealthy. This is a homeopathic book and as such will require a lifestyle change for lasting benefits. However, the benefits far outweigh the costs.

The alternative being, allopathic pain medicines for the rest of your life while watching your movement become more limited.

All in favor of living a good life without having to be bogged down by arthritis, say Aye!

The Death of Money: The Coming Collapse of the International Monetary System, by James Rickards

The next financial collapse will resemble nothing in history. . . . Deciding upon the best course to follow will require comprehending a minefield of risks, while poised at a crossroads, pondering the death of the dollar.

The U.S. dollar has been the global reserve currency since the end of World War II. If the dollar fails, the entire international monetary system will fail with it. But optimists have always said, in essence, that confidence in the dollar will never truly be shaken, no matter how high our national debt or how dysfunctional our government.

In the last few years, however, the risks have become too big to ignore. While Washington is gridlocked, our biggest rivals—China, Russia, and the oil-producing nations of the Middle East—are doing everything possible to end U.S. monetary hegemony. The potential results: Financial warfare. Deflation. Hyperinflation. Market collapse. Chaos.

James Rickards, the acclaimed author of Currency Wars, shows why money itself is now at risk and what we can all do to protect ourselves. He explains the power of converting unreliable investments into real wealth: gold, land, fine art, and other long-term stores of value.

Offers many fresh perspectives while covering familiar ground en route to commonly stated conclusions
By Graham H. Seibert
The introduction suggests that this book is going to rehash some fairly common themes. Then, delightfully, the first chapters veers off on an unexpected tangent, followed by an equally astute, and unexpected second chapter.

The introduction suggests that we are in for a time of either inflation or deflation, and that they are both equally dangerous. The thesis he repeats throughout the book is that central banks favor inflation for a number of reasons, but that they are having a hard time forcing inflation it to occur. There is simply too much slack in the economy in the form of unused labor, capital, and production capacity. Other authors argue that increases in productivity are inherently deflationary: if automation reduces the cost of manufacturing a car, competitive pressures will force manufacturers to sell them cheaper.

The federal government must have inflation for four reasons. Deflation causes an increase in the real value of the federal debt. It has an adverse impact on the debt to GDP ratio. Third, although banks may benefit initially by being repaid more than they lent, the risk of default increases dramatically in a deflationary environment. The fourth and final problem with deflation is that it reduces federal tax income. As nominal earnings decrease, the tax rate schedules, which are graduated, yield less revenue in real terms. Though asset value may rise in real terms, you cannot tax capital gains unless the nominal value rises.

Central banks throughout the world are fighting the tide as they work to promote inflation. The result of Quantitative Easing has been massive malinvestment by those to whom the newly coined money has been funneled.

Chapter One covers the financial signals that telegraphed the World Trade Center attack, had anybody been astute enough to parse the evidence. Rickards consulted with the CIA during the decade of the 2000s, looking for ways in which markets predicted attacks on American interests. In analyzing how the terrorists benefitted financially from their own act, he offers a broad discussion of financial forensics. He matter-of-factly documents overwhelming evidence of insider trading and market manipulation. These are not central to his theme, except insofar as obviously rigged markets make investors wary.

Chapter Two discusses financial warfare. The key insight is that state actors are often more interested in relative than absolute strength. Every war has costs, but if country A can destroy country B at an acceptable cost to itself, it may do so. Destroying the dollar would have a major impact on dollar holders such as China, but at the same time increase their relative strength in the world. His analysis of the way the US used finance to cripple Iran and Syria is quite insightful. As Russia and China free themselves from reliance on the dollar, they might do the same to us.

Chapter Three analyzes the increased involvement of central banks in the economies of their countries, and the general ill effects of central planning. It didn't work for the communists, and it doesn't work for Yellen. The Fed gets tangled up when it targets inflation and unemployment statistics, when its own actions influence those statistics, and the Federal Government has ample room to fudge the measurement of the statistics. Any policy can be justified.

Of the four causes of economic depression, Rickards claims that the greatest is regime uncertainty. People refuse to invest when the rules keep changing. Amity Shlaes and others have concluded that Roosevelt prolonged the Depression by constantly changing the rules for labor unions and other politically favored groups. And Obama is doing the same, with the same result. Entrepreneurs are reluctant to invest, leaving a lot of capital and labor idle.

Fed policy of low interest rates is forcing people to take unusual risks in pursuit of a return. Neither common people nor money managers find it easy to sit tight and accept a zero return on capital for any period of time. Instead, they have been stampeded into the only games in town - overinflated real estate (again) and a rigged stock market. Interest rates, and especially the price of gold, have been forced down in order to push money into these bubbles.

Chapter Four focuses on China, beginning with a sweeping historical overview of the world's longest lived civilization. He observes that it swings rather regularly back and forth between centralization and decentralization, each in turn cleaning out the excesses of the other. This is a time of great malinvestment. Whereas consumers account for 71% of US spending, the figure for China is only 35%. For investment, it is 13% vs. 48%. The latter is an absurd figure, including vast amounts of malinvestment: empty cities, trains to nowhere, and the like. As in the US, the middle class is the victim. As their savings receive negative rates of return, vast amounts of money go into mutual-fund type vehicles which in turn invest in the bubble. It will not end well.

Though China, with $3 trillion in assets, could put its financial house in order, it will not. The powers that be make their money from the malinvestment. The growing wealth disparity represents a major threat to the regime.

Chapter Five is on Germany and the Euro Zone. It is refreshingly different from the mostly negative analyses most authors offer. He gives good reasons why the Euro should survive as a currency and cites optimistic statistics about the progress that the PIIGS, especially Greece, have made in cleaning up their economies. In particular he notes that contrary to the Keynes/Krugman theory of "sticky wages," wage rates have been able to fall by a whopping 22% even without abandoning the Euro. Moreover, Greece is attracting new investment.

The Euro zone is continuing to expand, with the recent admission of Latvia and Croatia, and the potential membership of Serbia, Macedonia and Turkey.

On the other hand, the Euro zone does suffer from a lack of uniformity in banking standards and deposit insurance. A bigger problem is that few of the member states meet the requirements for keeping their finances in order. They are to run deficits of no more than 3% if their Debt/GDP ratio is less than 60 (very few of them) and no more than ½ percent if debt is higher.

Chapter Six begins with a discussion of the BRICS, then goes on to the GIIPS (nice acronym for the PIIGS) and BELLS. The latter - Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania - was new to me. His major point is that the BELLS swallowed their medicine after the crisis of 2008, accepting a plunge in the GDP and austerity, refusing to devalue, in order to retain investor confidence. The PIIGS did what the US has done - print money, in some cases devalue, and pretend the problem will go away. The BELLS have fared quite well - the PIIGS not so well.

He has a wonderful quote on Russia: "The Russian economy is best understood as a natural-resource-extraction racket run by oligarchs and politicians who skim enormous amounts off the top and reinvest just enough to keep the game going." That has been the game here in Ukraine as well, and the Maidan revolutions of 2004 and 2013 are attempts to wrench the country free of the oligarchs.

Chapter 7 - Debt, deficits and the dollar

What is the meaning of money? The classical definition is (1) a store of value, (2) a medium of exchange, and (3) a unit of account. These meanings are important, and Rickards has a great dissertation on the various points of view. This is a matter of practical import. Is gold money? Is Bitcoin money?

He offers an interesting view. We are already on the gold standard, in that anybody who wants to is free to buy gold and use it as a store of wealth. It is not in governments' interest that we do so, which is why they echo Keynes, calling it a "barbarous relic" and openly manipulate its price to make it unattractive. One reads so much about the manipulation that it is worth citing other sources. It is a major theme on zerohedge. Paul Craig Roberts did a good piece in January. The Gold Antitrust Committee covers it regularly, and I review Geheime Goldpolitik: Warum die Zentralbanken den Goldpreis steuern (German Edition).

Rickards says that government investment is justified if it satisfies three conditions: (1) only government could do it, (2) they can afford it, and (3) it has a positive return on investment. Two positive investments were the Interstate Highway System and the Internet. Most government investments, including just about everything Obama has done, do not qualify. They channel money the government cannot afford (has to print) to favored groups for investments (solar, education) which will never pay for themselves.

Chapter 8 is on the IMF, the banker to the world. At present the IMF's balance sheet is only about 600 billion, small compared to those of the central banks. His point is that the IMF is the ultimate backup when central banks fail. The IMF has recently, quietly gotten permission to act like a bank, lending in excess of the asset base formed by member-state quotas. The currently allowed ratio is a conservative (for banks) 3:1. But - the mechanism is in place to print vast amounts, if and when the world's central banks get in trouble.

The most interesting part of the chapter is a portrait of Dr. Min Zhu, the Chinese deputy to Christine Lagarde. He is a man who has seen both the Chinese and the Western systems, is smart enough to see the inherent contradictions within the IMF, and sometimes sufficiently candid to coyly reveal what he knows. A nice portrait. NB: Other illumination portraits in previous chapters include Andy Marshall of the Pentagon and Randy Tauss of the CIA. Rickards knows them not merely as a writer, but from having worked intimately with them.

One of the truths that is widely known in financial circles, but seldom admitted, is that today's economic problems are primarily structural rather than cyclical. Don't blame it on the business cycle. The changes in demography, technology and society are structural and will not reverse themselves. Neither Japan nor China will sprout a generation of new workers overnight. In the US, the number of people entitled to entitlements will not shrink; neither will the cost of "free" medicine.

His thesis is that the SDR, the IMF "currency" formed of a market basket of national currencies, could become a world currency. Moreover, it could, if his suggestions were followed, be pegged to gold as a deterrent to uncontrollable fiat currencies.

Chapter 9 - Gold

This is the meat of the matter. Gold is money. The purest money. It is not a commodity, despite where it may be traded, because unlike commodities it is rarely consumed, but used almost exclusively as a store of value.

Rickards writes openly and authoritatively about the ways in which central banks and government manipulate the price of gold.

Chapter 10 - Crossroads

Rickards writes as a throwaway that our governments are manipulating all the markets. It is so widely accepted as not to require amplification.

There is massive malinvestment, from Chinese ghost cities to US student loans. While the problems could be fixed, the structure of our political systems will almost certainly not allow it. The vested interests are too strong.

Chapter 11 - Maelstrom

Rickards has referred to complexity theory often throughout the book. Here he amplifies the discussion. Systems, especially those involving human beings, are simply too complex to be predicted. One never knows, by analogy, which snowflake will trigger the avalanche. All you can know is that an avalanche is likely.

He says that the crunch time is here for the Federal Reserve. There is a term used in complexity theory: a system about to fail goes wobbly, much as the top stars to wobble when it runs out of centrifugal force. He says that the Federal Reserve is already there, and it is unable to fill any of its roles other than to continue to monetize debt.

Conclusion

This is the pay dirt. Rather like a Biblical prophet, he lists seven signs of the end times. And most useful, he gives his assessment of how to brace for the storm. He would own gold, land, hedge funds invested in hard assets, fine art and cash.

Rickards cites a relative handful of sources repeatedly: Krugman, Reinhart and Rogoff, Bernanke, and Robert Rubin's acolytes. While he has an occasional good word for each of them, he is properly scathing when appropriate.

Rickards is more willing to accept official statistics on unemployment, inflation and the like than others. He does not express skepticism as to whether or not the gold is still in Fort Knox. The skeptics are well known - look at zerohedge - and I find it impressive that he can build such a strong case for the imminent "death of money" even taking government claims and statistics at face value.

The book could have been endlessly large. Subjects which Rickards chooses not to address are the declining quality of our human resources - poor education, and the skew of childbearing to the least capable members of society, the inexorable rise in entitlement spending, and the decline of the work ethic. See Coming Apart: The State of White America, 1960-2010 for this discussion.

All in all, a masterful job by a man who has lived with his subject for most of a lifetime, and yet writes with the clarity of a lifelong author. A rare treat.

Plenty to chew on
By Erez Davidi
I very much enjoyed Rickards' first book, "Currency Wars." This was a very good sequel, although in my opinion it doesn't rise to the same level.

The premise of the book is fairly straight forward: The current monetary system is unsustainable and it's bound to collapse. It all can be boiled down to a few reasons: debt, structural problems in the world economy, derivatives, and out-of-control increases in the money supply.

According to Rickards, it's only a question of time. Monetary collapse can sound quite alarmist to some. (The over-the-top title, probably selected by the editor, doesn't help). However, Rickards points out, rightfully so, that it is not as uncommon as people tend to think. In the past century alone, the international monetary system changed three times; the first after WWI, the second after WWII (Bretton Woods agreement), the third was in 1971 after Nixon closed the gold window.

Even though I tend think that a change, at least to some degree, of the monetary system is definitely in the cards, I was not fully convinced by Rickards' arguments. As well, I found the first few chapters on the financial wars entirely unrelated to the premise of the book. Having said that, some chapters were original and intriguing, such as the chapters on the IMF, which will take the lead rule in the new monetary system to come.

I suspect that a lot of readers will not agree with everything Rickards has to say, but I also suspect that a lot of readers will learn something new by reading this thought-provoking book.

This is a great book...
By AndyS.
This is a great book, the second I have read by James Rickards. He's written the previous best selling book, "Currency Wars". Mr. Rickards has had a career in varied realms, he has degrees in Int'l. Economics (went to grad school with the likes of Timothy Geitner) and several legal disciplines. He's a regular on many MSM including CNBC where I first saw him about 8 years ago. He's an insider in more ways than one. Six years ago he pointed out that China was bent on accumulating gold to diversify their assets (boy was he right). Then 3 years ago he began talking about plans to revive an old 1960's era monetary maneuver which he called "Operation Twist", sure enogh a couple of months later the Fed announced Operation Twist which entailed buying long term US Treasury debt and selling short term. So when Mr. Rickards speaks I sit up and listen. In this book he talks about what is bound to happen with our present US$ based monetary system, how to recognize what is happening and the various ways this could play out. None of the three scenarios is good for us here in the USA, however, there are ways to prepare for these eventualities, woe to the unprepared. One likely way this could play out is by the IMF assuming the task of issuing world currency in the guise of the SDR which was first issued in the 1970's and has once again been undergoing much expansion on their balance sheet since the 2008 near meltdown.

“The next financial collapse will resemble nothing in history. . . . Deciding upon the best course to follow will require comprehending a minefield of risks, while poised at a crossroads, pondering the death of the dollar.”

"The international monetary system has collapsed three times in the past hundred years, in 1914, 1939, and 1971. Each collapse was followed by a period of tumult: war, civil unrest, or significant damage to the stability of the global economy".

Mr.Rickards shows why another collapse is rapidly approaching and this time it will be bigger than the Fed.

"The American dollar has been the global reserve currency since the end of the Second World War. If the dollar fails, the entire international monetary system will fail with it. No other currency has the deep, liquid pools of assets needed to do the job.

Optimists have always said, in essence, that there’s nothing to worry about—that confidence in the dollar will never truly be shaken, no matter how high our national debt or how dysfunctional our government. But in the last few years, the risks have become too big to ignore. While Washington is gridlocked and unable to make progress on our long-term problems, our biggest economic competitors—China, Russia, and the oilproducing nations of the Middle East—are doing everything possible to end U.S. monetary hegemony. The potential results: Financial warfare. Deflation. Hyperinflation. Market collapse. Chaos".
