Interesting and Educational!
By Loyd Eskildson
"Living with Volcanoes" is about Indonesia and living close to 129 active volcanoes. On Java alone, 120 million people live in the shadow of more than 30 volcanoes, a proximity that has proved fatal to more than 170,000 as recently as 2004. Reverence for volcanoes is a national trait, across 300 ethnic groups and more than 700 languages and dialects. Science and mysticism collide in this article regarding whether a certain village should be evacuated. This time they are spared.

"High-Tech Trash" tells of primitive computer recycling efforts in Ghana's capital. They break copper yokes off picture tubes, littering the ground with shards containing lead, a neurotoxin, and cadmium, a carcinogen that damages lungs and kidneys. They strip resalable parts such as drives and memory chips. Then they rip out wiring and burn the plastic. Broken monitors float in the lagoon, soon to wash into the ocean. PCs are not the only "fuel" - about 25 million TVs are taken out of service yearly. Meanwhile, about 180 million TVs, desktop PCs, and other components as of 2005 sit in storage, according to the EPA, with goodly amounts of gold and silver that are environmentally preferable to recover than re-mine.

Ghana is not the only recipient of e-waste. China has, until recently, been a major player. The good news is that some major recyclers have created safe, profitable sites.

"The Emptied Prairie" is a story about North Dakota one of the windiest and coldest states. Railroads railroads lured largely Norwegian and German settlers into North Dakota with promises of homesteads. People believed rain would follow the plow. But they were wrong, and debris of an abandoned lives is prevalent. Wolves and moose are returning.

Who's Afraid of the Holy Spirit?: An Investigation into the Ministry of the Spirit of God Today, by Daniel B. Wallace

The origins of this book came in the early 1990’s when both editors (Jim Sawyer and Dan Wallace) were facing trauma in their lives and in the lives of their families—traumas that their rationalistic theological training had left them unequipped to deal with. According to Sawyer and Wallace, “The propositions of our theology left us cold, and failed to speak vitally to the pain we each felt. Independently, as scholars trained in the evangelical cessationist tradition we came to grips with the spiritual sterility of that tradition. As we shared our personal ‘war stories’ we discovered similar trajectories in the development of our understanding of the reality and necessity of the personal and existential work of the Holy Spirit in our lives. Doctrine and biblical knowledge alone simply did not cut it.” While not endorsing what they consider to be the excesses of Pentecostalism, the charismatic movement, and the Third Wave, Sawyer and Wallace have embraced what they have tentatively called pneumatic Christianity. They contend that the way much of evangelical cessationism has developed is reactionary and reductionistic. Rather than focus upon scriptural images of the Holy Spirit as a presence deep within the soul of the believer, many cessationists have reactively denied experience in opposition to the Pentecostal overemphasis upon experience, which at times supplanted the revealed truth of scripture. Who's Alive to the Holy Spirit?
By Robert W. Kellemen
In 1993, Chuck Swindoll authored "Flying Closer to the Flame: A Passion for the Holy Spirit." What that book was for the general non-charismatic Protestant lay person, "Who's Afraid of the Holy Spirit?" is for the scholarly non-charismatic Protestant pastor, professor, and student.

The co-editors, Wallace and Sawyer, along with the nine other contributing authors, all write from the cessationist theological camp. Cessationists believe that the Bible teaches that the sign gift ministry of the Holy Spirit ceased at the close of the New Testament canon. These sign gifts (such as the gift of healing, miracle working, speaking in tongues, prophecy, etc.) were given to authenticate the apostolic ministry and message of inspired Scripture and not meant to be ongoing aspects of the Spirit's ministry in the believer throughout church history.

The purpose of "Who's Afraid of the Holy Spirit?" is not to provide theological support for that view. Instead, that view is assumed. Rather, the purpose is to stretch their fellow cessationists to consider the ongoing, active, powerful, personal presence and ministry of the Spirit today in the experiential life of the non-charismatic Christian.

Wallace and Sawyer launch their edited work with candid narratives of their personal experience in the cessationist camp. When life crisis struck, their personal, academic approach to the Spirit was found wanting. At the same time, their theological convictions did not allow for a charismatic experience of the Spirit. Out of that tension, this book was born. How does a non-charismatic cessationist experience the power and presence of the Holy Spirit?

The eleven assembled cessationist scholars address that question theologically, historically, and personally. As with any collaborative book, the linkage between various chapters can be choppy and the value of diverse chapters varies. However, over all, readers are exposed to a wide assortment of important theological examinations.

Before a summary overview, readers should understand, as noted in the opening paragraph of this review, that this book is not for those disinclined toward scholarly detail. Swindoll's book, though fifteen years old, is still the place to go for the lay non-charismatic wanting a practical theology of the Holy Spirit.

One of the central issues addressed is summarized by several of the authors in the disturbing picture of the cessationist "Trinity": Father, Son, and Holy Scripture." Yes, you read that right--Holy Scripture. Wallace and his co-writers sense that for many non-charismatics the Holy Scriptures have replaced the Holy Spirit. The authors ask readers to consider what the role of the Spirit is in their lives now that the canon is completed.

Wallace's chapter on the witness of the Spirit in Romans 8:16 is core to that discussion. In a nutshell, Wallace presents a joint ministry of Spirit and Scripture. Believers have confidence that they are Christians based upon the objective testimony of Scripture and the subjective witness of the Spirit. This dual, mingled role of Spirit and Scripture is emphasized throughout "Who's Afraid of the Holy Spirit?"

Richard Averbeck, in his chapter on "God, People, and the Bible," does a fine job exploring the relationship between illumination and biblical scholarship. He also does an excellent job convicting the typical evangelical scholar of his/her failure to be dependent upon and open to the Spirit in the scholarly process.

"The Spirit in the Black Church" by Willie Peterson is one of those "worth the price of the book" chapters. For anyone wanting a handle on how black cessationist evangelicals handle the "tension" between the experience of the Spirit and the cessation of the sign gifts, this is the chapter to read. Peterson's blending of history, theology, culture, and current ministry is example-setting.

David Eckman's chapter on "The Holy Spirit and Emotions" should be required reading for all seminary professors, students, pastors, and Christian counselors. It provides the seeds for a much needed evangelical theology of emotions. Emotional intelligence has been a buzz word in secular writing for nearly two decades. Yet the Christian community still has not offered a practical biblical theology of emotionality. Eckman has laid the foundation.

Co-editor James Sawyer's concluding chapter "The Father, the Son, and the Holy Scriptures?" powerfully encapsulates the message of the book. Sawyer journeys with readers on an important historical trek which opens eyes to why cessationists have become so afraid of the Holy Spirit. His fascinating and ironic premise is that the same evangelicals who decry how the Enlightenment influenced liberal Christianity, were themselves influenced by Enlightenment rationalism. Ouch. You have to read it to appreciate it.

Overall, "Who's Afraid of the Holy Spirit?" is a timely book that has already stirred up much needed conversation. Admittedly, a few chapters were uneven at times--seeming not to fit the overall flow of the book--as if they had been written for other venues (which is most likely true) and woven into the fabric of this book. Yet, that is minor in the overall scope of this important contribution to the field.

Perhaps the true "criticism" I have about this book is its failure to provide a "spiritual theology of the Holy Spirit." Before I explain that, I should say that in fairness to the authors, that was not the full intention of this book. So, my encouragement would be that they rejoin to write "volume two."

As I think about the theological process, I see at least four "types" of theologies: academic, historical, practical/pastoral, and spiritual. Academic theology (including systematic, biblical, exegetical, and lexical) explores the "What?" questions. As the label suggests, it is academic in nature. This book does a splendid job exploring the academic theology of the Holy Spirit from a cessationist perspective.

Historical theology explores the development of doctrine over time. It asks the "What then?" questions. This book also does an excellent job uncovering and presenting the doctrine of the Holy Spirit in the evangelical tradition.

Spiritual theology asks the "So what?" questions. What are the implications for our lives of the academic truths discovered in the text? "Who's Afraid of the Holy Spirit?" did a commendable job challenging readers to consider such implications. It presented many categories for the cessationist Christian to think through.

Practical/pastoral theology asks the "What now?" questions. How do we personally apply and how do we disciple, mentor, and guide others in the application of the text? Here is where I felt a level of disappointment with the book. As a pastor/counselor/professor/soul physician, I wanted more practical direction. We learned what not to do. We even learned what areas to think through. But we readers were not given many pictures of what this actually looks like in daily existence. We were not given many models of discipleship ministry. What exactly does it look like to equip and empower cessationist Christians to be filled with the Spirit, to be led by the Spirit, to express the fruit of the Spirit. While some of these topics were broached, the focus often failed to address fully the practical "what now?" questions. Again, no one book can "do it all." But a book emphasizing how cessationists can and should experience the empowering presence of the Spirit could "go there." I hope the next volume does so to a greater extent. That said, I still highly recommend this book. It deserves all five of its stars.

Reviewer: Bob Kellemen, Ph.D., is the author of "Beyond the Suffering," "Soul Physicians," and "Spiritual Friends."

An Excellent Treatise on the Holy Spirit . . .
By Brittany C. Burnette
This book is highly recommended for the seminarian, scholar or lay-person who seeks to understand the role of the Holy Spirit in the everyday life of a believer. While the book is written from a cessationist standpoint, the contributors argue that the third person of the Trinity is indispensible for the proper study of the Bible, for a right understanding of our emotions, for authentic worship in the local church, and for a Christ-centered love of all people. Of special note are Wallace's essay on "The Witness of the Holy Spirit in Rom 8:16," Averbeck's piece entitled "God, People, and the Bible," and Willie O. Peterson's work on "The Spirit in the Black Church." Perhaps the most moving section of the book, though, is Wallace's introduction entitled "The Uneasy Conscience of a Non-Charismatic Evangelical." Here, Wallace honestly writes of his struggle with God as he and his family came to terms with his son's cancer. The Bible alone was not a remedy for his grief; instead, a personal, existential experience of God was needed, and this came through the ministry of the Holy Spirit. This book reminds us that whether we are scholars or lay-people, the goal of Bible study is not that we simply master the Scripture; instead, we must earnestly desire that the Scripture masters us by the life-changing work of the Spirit. Both cessationists and charismatics will appreciate this book's emphasis on the unique role of the Holy Spirit for the life and practice of the Church; in the end, the work proves to be a thoughtful, penetrating read.

Great resource!
By Sandra Glahn
This wonderful book by a group of more than ten cessationist scholars asks the question, "If the Holy Spirit did not die in the first century, then what in the world is He doing today?" J. P. Moreland describes it as "a book whose time has come." Willie Peterson's chapter on "The Spirit in the Black Church" is worth the price of the book.

The Refiner's Fire: The Making of Mormon Cosmology, 1644-1844, by John L. Brooke

Mormon religious belief has long been a mystery to outsiders, either dismissed as anomalous to the American religious tradition or extolled as the most genuine creation of the American imagination. The Refiner's Fire presents a new and comprehensive understanding of the roots of Mormon religion, whose theology promises the faithful that they will become "gods" through the restoration of ancient mysteries and regain the divine powers of Adam lost in the fall from Paradise. Professor Brooke contends that the origins of Mormonism lie in the fusion of radical religion with occult ideas, and organizes his book around the two problems of demonstrating the survival of these ideas into the nineteenth century and explaining how they were manifested in Mormon doctrine. In the concluding chapter, the author provides an outline of how Mormonism since the 1850s gradually moved toward traditional Protestant Christianity. As well as religion, the book explores magic, witchcraft, alchemy, Freemasonry, counterfeiting, and state-formation. John L. Brooke is professor of history at Tufts University and the acclaimed author of The Heart of the Commonwealth: Society and Political Culture in Worcester County, Massachusetts, 1713-1861 (CUP, 1989), which has won, among other prizes, the Organization of American Historians' Merle Curti Award for Intellectual History and the National Historical Society Book Prize for American History.

Review
"John Brooke takes a controversial romp over the field of previous Mormon scholarship. When he has done, he has managed to raise the intellectual pedigree of Joseph Smith by establishing his close kinship with European hermeticists and the subversive sectarians of the Radical Reformation. It is a fascinating argument that traces the influence of ideas through complicated social networks of neighbors and kin. The people 'prepared' for Mormonism are a surprising lot." R. Laurence Moore, Cornell University

"The Refiner's Fire explores the complex and always intriguing world of early Mormon theological and ritual evolution with remarkable learning, fairness, and daring--an exciting, sophisticated account sure to generate both controversy and a renewed appreciation of early Mormon spiritual creativity." John Butler, Yale University

"This is not just a revealing history of the backgrund of the first Mormons and early Mormonism but a larger history of early American culture that will do almost as much for readers who are interested in the cultural context in which this new American religion developed as it will do for those who simply want to learn more about Mormon beginnings." Jan Shipps, Indiana University-Purdue University, Indianapolis

"His book is a model of the historian's enterprise....[Brooke] blends the passion of the detective and the dispassion of the good judge as he describes the background and context of Mormonism." Martin E. Marty, Commonwealth

"An insightful contribution to the controversy surrounding the origins of Mormonism." College & Research Libraries News

"Excellent....This study not only sets Mormon religious history into a frontier occult milieu but offers important understanding of the beliefs and practices of Americans outside the individual and institutional carriers commonly the focus of previous occult histories." The Reader's Review

"The Refiner's Fire is a wonderful book, thoroughly researched and rich in interpretive detail." Curtis Johnson, The Journal of American History

"The Refiner's Fire is an important and daring work for which Brooke has received the Bancroft Prize in American history....Combining intellectual and demographic history with rare skill, Brooke sheds great light on transatlantic subcultures that have not been labeled "occult" (read "hidden") for nothing." Religious Studies Review

From the Back Cover
Mormon religious belief has long been a mystery to outsiders, either dismissed as anomalous to the American religious tradition or extolled as the most genuine creation of the American religious imagination. This study presents the first extended analysis of Mormon theology to have been written against the backdrop of religion and popular culture in the early modern North Atlantic world, a context that permits the most coherent analysis of Mormon origins. John Brooke argues that Mormon doctrines of the mutuality of spirit and matter, of celestial marriage (in the nineteenth century, polygamous marriage), and of human deification can be understood only in light of the connections between the occult and the sectarian ideal of restoration forged among early modern religious radicals. Hermeticism, of which alchemy was the experimental practice, posited that humanity could regain the divine powers of Adam lost in the fall from Paradise; so too the prophet Joseph Smith promised the Mormon faithful that they would become "gods" through the restoration of ancient mysteries. Exploring the opposing forces of hermetic purity and danger - manifested in sectarian religion, magic, witchcraft beliefs, alchemy, Freemasonry, counterfeiting, and state formation - in the making of the Mormon church, the book closes with an overview of the transformation of Mormonism from the 1860s to the present.

Interesting Background to LDS Cosmology
By Jeremy Tarbush
I chose four stars because I felt this book didn't quite prove decisive about why Mormon Cosmology was wrong. At best, it proved that it was partially of a 19th century context. Joseph Smith was not perfect, neither was anyone except Christ. Moses murdered a guy, David was an adulterer, etc.etc. This book shows more about the 19th century context and makes some notes about Smith without good sources. It speaks with definite motive, and is a good read at best, but does not tell the entire story.

This book is a very dense read, but it is a very comprehensive work about Mormonism and its origins. Finally, Mormonism makes some sense. I highly recommend it for the person trying to learn about the history and origins of the LDS church.

Advances in Unsupervised Adaptive Filtering
By A Customer
This book is essential for anyone who wishes to stay informed about new developments in the very important field of signal processing. In the introduction, Simon Haykin (of Canada's McMaster University) explains the classification of supervised and unsupervised forms of adaptive filtering and the three fundamental approaches to unsupervised adaptive filtering. He also explains that blind deconvolution (the subject of volume 2) involves inverse problems with both similarities and differences vis-a-vis blind source separation. In an important way, volume one is an indispensable introduction to the second volume.
The contributors to volume one are an impressive collection from both academic research and the private sector. Haykin has assembled an international team from institutions and private laboratories in France, Japan and the United States. Their contributions are both theoretical and practical. The chapters include references to important literature in signal processing, communications and control, to facilitate further research.
The first seven chapters are information-theoretic approaches. The final two chapters present important practical issues in solving problems with delayed or convolved mixtures of independent source signals. Chapter Nine (by R. Lambert and C. Nikias) is especially useful, as it presents a powerful and novel tool for separating real-life speech.
This book is a significant contribution to the signal processing literature and deserves a place on the shelf of anyone interested in adaptive filtering.

Still one of the most cogent and clear primers available on the topic
By Stuart Hurlbert
In any technical discipline, it is unusual that a textbook written more than half a century ago would still be of much use let alone stand near the head of its class. Yet such is exactly the case with D.R. Cox's Planning of Experiments. This was published in 1958 and never revised. It was written when Cox was in his early thirties and evidently too nave to understand the importance to maximization of long term sales of including enough errors, illogical argument and other nonsense to justify the putting out of 2d, 3d, and 4th editions later on.

This remains one of the best concept-focused primers on experimental design available. It was designed by its author "to give a comprehensive nonmathematical course on the design and analysis of experiments...in conjunction with a textbook on statistical analysis [and].... to avoid statistical and mathematical technicalities and to concentrate on a treatment that will be intuitively acceptable to the experimental worker, for whom the book is primarily intended." Neophytes starting experimental work in any discipline - biology, psychology, industrial processes, medicine, etc. - would be well advised to digest early the content of this slim treatise. For students, if your instructor has assigned another statistics or design textbook, reading this one first may be very helpful and give you a head start. Until Roger Mead's Design of Experiments came out in 1988, I used Planning of Experiments, with many supplementary readings, as the text for my own course on experimental design for biology graduate students.

To their detriment many recent books on experimental design ignore or misrepresent the classical conceptual and terminological frameworks of experimental design. Cox, in contrast, presents these with great clarity. Especially valuable is his careful attention to the core (and widely misunderstood) concept of the experimental unit (pp. 2, 13, 19-21, 155, 191-196), a term completely abandoned by many more recent, more mathematically oriented books on experimental design. Treatment of other core concepts such as randomization, blocking, concomitant observations, crossover designs, and split-unit designs are equally clear and cogent.

Shortcomings of the book as a primer are few and reflect only the state of the pre-1958 experimental design literature, not errors on the part of Cox. The tripartite nature of an experimental design as consisting of a treatment structure, design structure and response structure (Urquhart 1981, Hurlbert & Lombardi 2004, Hinkelmann & Kempthorne 2008, Hurlbert 2013), had been presented, without those labels, by Finney (1955), but Cox, like most modern design texts, did not (p.4) explicitly acknowledge response structure as distinct from the other two components. Repeated measures response structures, one of the commonest types in many experimental fields, are very superficially discussed in a single paragraph late in the book (p. 277). That at least makes clear to the reader that for basic instruction on that topic recourse must be had to some modern text that treats that subject matter well (e.g. Mead 1988, Mead et al. 2003, Hinkelmann & Kempthorne 2008).

A final quibble is with Cox's recommendation (pp. 92-93) (1) that variables such as species, variety, breed, sex, etc. cannot be considered treatment factors because they represent "an intrinsic property of the unit and not something assigned to it by the experimenter," and (2) that they should be labeled "classification factors." This would seem a needless complication of matters. It is only necessary to acknowledge that experimental units have an "ontogeny", undergo changes, during the course of an experiment. The material of prime interests (e.g. an animal or a crop yield) may not even be present at the time decisions are made as to which treatment (placement of an animal or sowing of a seed set) each experimental unit (cage or plot) will receive. So one cannot randomly assign the property "variety" to a set of "generic" seeds, but one can randomly assign a set of seeds of a given variety to a plot. In Example 6.4 (p. 93), Cox further elaborates on his idea of classification factors. But in that example his classification factor ("center") is better regarded as a classification blocking factor (in contrast to the more typical nuisance blocking factor), not a treatment factor.

From Publishers Weekly
A mixture of visionary progressivism and repugnant racism, Abraham Lincoln's attitude toward slavery is the most troubling aspect of his public life, one that gets a probing assessment in this study. Columbia historian and Bancroft Prize winner Foner (Free Soil, Free Labor, Free Men) traces the complexities of Lincoln's evolving ideas about slavery and African-Americans: while he detested slavery, he also publicly rejected political and social equality for blacks, dragged his feet (critics charged) on emancipating slaves and accepting black recruits into the Union army, and floated schemes for colonizing freedmen overseas almost to war's end. Foner situates this record within a lucid, nuanced discussion of the era's turbulent racial politics; in his account Lincoln is a canny operator, cautiously navigating the racist attitudes of Northern whites, prodded--and sometimes willing to be prodded--by abolitionists and racial egalitarians pressing faster reforms. But as Foner tells it, Lincoln also embodies a society-wide transformation in consciousness, as the war's upheavals and the dynamic new roles played by African-Americans made previously unthinkable claims of freedom and equality seem inevitable. Lincoln is no paragon in Foner's searching portrait, but something more essential--a politician with an open mind and a restless conscience. 16 pages of illus., 3 maps.

Review
Do we need yet another book on Lincoln?... Well, yes, we do if the book is by so richly informed a commentator as Eric Foner. Foner tackles what would seem to be an obvious topic, Lincoln and slavery, and manages to cast new light on it.... Because of his broad-ranging knowledge of the 19th century, Foner is able to provide the most thorough and judicious account of Lincoln's attitudes toward slavery that we have.--David S. Reynolds

Starred Review. Original and compelling .In the vast library on Lincoln, Foner s book stands out as the most sensible and sensitive reading of Lincoln s lifetime involvement with slavery and the most insightful assessment of Lincoln s and indeed America s imperative to move toward freedom lest it be lost. An essential work for all Americans. "

Moving and rewarding. . . . A master historian at work. --David W. Blight"

No one else has written about [Lincoln's] trajectory of change with such balance, fairness, depth of analysis, and lucid precision of language. --James M. McPherson"

Do we need another book on Lincoln? Yes, we do if the book is by so richly informed a commentator as Eric Foner. --David S. Reynolds"

While many thousands of books deal with Lincoln and slavery, Eric Foner has written the definitive account of this crucial subject, illuminating in a highly original and profound way the interactions of race, slavery, public opinion, politics, and Lincoln's own character that led to the wholly improbable uncompensated emancipation of some four million slaves. Even seasoned historians will acquire fresh and new perspectives from reading The Fiery Trial. --David Brion Davis, author of Inhuman Bondage: The Rise and Fall of Slavery in the New World"

This volume stands alone in the field. It is not only the best account ever written on the subject; henceforth, it should be regarded as the only account." --Harold Holzer, author of Lincoln President-Elect "Eric Foner has done it again. The Fiery Trial explores the pivotal subject of Lincoln and slavery free from the mists of hagiography and the muck of denigration. With his usual stylish mastery, Foner advances enlightened debate over our greatest president, the origins and unfolding of the Civil War, and the abolition of southern slavery. His book marks an auspicious intellectual beginning to the sesquicentennial of the American Iliad." --Sean Wilentz, author of The Rise of American Democracy: Jefferson to Lincoln

An in-depth examination of the great question facing a great man
By Bruce Trinque
Eric Foner's "The Fiery Trial: Abraham Lincoln and American Slavery" is the finst study I have ever seen of Lincoln and the central question that America faced in the middle of the 19th century: what to do about slavery? Foner's book traces in great detail Lincoln's evolving public responses on what to do about slavery (and rce) from the 1830s until the eve of his death in 1865. And I do specify "public responses" because in private Lincoln played his cards very close to the vest, and it is extremely difficult to determine exactly how far his true inner feelings varied at any particular time from what he said or wrote for public knowledge. Obviously, his opinions modified with time; the Lincoln of April, 1865, was not wholly the same man as the Lincoln of mid-1861, just as that man differed from the Lincoln of 1860 or 1858 or 1854. The line between consciously forming and leading public opinion on the subject versus being led by external events is not readily discerned in every case, but Foner does as thorough a job of analysis as we are ever likely to see.

"The Fiery Trial" demands close attention, as the narrative thread winds and twists among the myriad complex issues presented by slavery and its attendent racism. In the end, the story does become one of change, how one extraordinary man traveled from the ordinary deep, casual racism of the time and place of his birth to a position that impelled him in the end to embrace a notion of equality that not only forbade slavery but demanded even-handed treatment before the law and even expanded to include that simple justice required extension of the right to vote. It was a long journey, and Lincoln was neither the perfect saint of later myth, nor the racist demon featured in so much recent revisionist history, but instead was a complex, real man who grew in stature to meet the greatest challenge of his era.

Invaluable and Insightful
By JMB1014
Eric Foner is a great American historian. His book on Reconstruction remains the standard and definitive work. This volume is the definitive study of Lincoln's evolving attitude toward slavery.

Foner sets out the story in chronological order. He strikes a fine balance between the competing demands of completeness and concision and does so with both sound scholarship and narrative flair. To say this book reads well is an understatement.

Of course we read that Lincoln grew up in border areas and had limited and somewhat ambivalent dealings with blacks. He talked about blacks in language that makes us cringe. He could be patronizing and yet he was increasingly aware. And his initial stance on slavery, which originally owed much to his "beau ideal," Henry Clay, seems in retrospect hopelessly naive. For many years, he favored a combination of gradual emancipation rather than outright abolition, compensation of slave-owners, and colonization of slaves in another nation rather than integration here. Bizarre as colonization seems to us now, among opponents of slavery it was for decades considered the only realistic option once slaves were emancipated. Even in the North, it was all but unthinkable that blacks could be integrated and enjoy social, legal and political equality.

It is widely understood that Lincoln's attitude toward blacks and slavery evolved, as did his insight into how to govern a divided nation in the midst of a war that almost daily threatened to arrive at his very doorstep. No president has ever had to respond so quickly to such immense domestic crises or to maintain his footing as he tried to win a war, keep states in the union, maintain the long view with respect to eventual reunification, preserve relations with foreign powers, contend with a nest of rivals in his own cabinet, address military advances and concomitant political changes, and through it all, develop a nuanced and principled position on slavery and the role of black people in society as well as in the Union army.

Lincoln could be startlingly candid. One of the most famous instances of his candor is the observation that he had not controlled events: events had controlled him. But his responses to the constantly shifting course of events and to the manifold ramifications of every development were almost unerring. We who already know the script may be inclined to discount how tricky and complex this process was for Lincoln. But Foner will not let us be complacent. Revealing how deftly Lincoln met each change of circumstance, and not merely explaining Lincoln's evolving perspective on slavery, is the real contribution of Foner's superb volume.

As the war progressed, it became clear to those who saw slavery up close for the first time that it was far more abhorrent than they had ever imagined. And as slaves rushed to Union lines, Union commanders often improvised to find ways to deal with their arrival and their status. For an agonizingly long time, Lincoln officially supported the laws that permitted slavery. At least in the earlier phases of the war, he revoked unauthorized actions taken by his subordinates against slavery, as when he relieved John C. Fremont of duty for ostentatiously ordering that slaves in Missouri be freed. But increasingly Lincoln also looked the other way when his officers assisted slaves who had fled their masters and appeared at Union army camps seeking sanctuary. General Benjamin Butler, a mediocre general but a shrewd lawyer, solved the problem neatly by declaring that such slaves were "contraband." While the term seems demeaning, it was adopted with delight by those whose freedom it protected.

Among northern opponents of slavery, Lincoln was often regarded as dithering. They even tried to nominate Fremont to oppose him in 1864. Nevertheless, events ultimately worked in Lincoln's favor. He succeeded in keeping border states in the union. And the success of federal arms in reasserting control over contested land and the eventual recognition that the army needed black soldiers (together with the courage and valor black troops displayed in combat) did much to convince Lincoln and other Americans that slavery was simply going to be ended without the need to compensate slave-owners, that blacks deserved their freedom, and that they truly wanted to remain in the United States, as it was their home. Gradualism, compensation, and colonization thus became "a creed outworn."

The North's military momentum gave reconstruction a highly progressive cast early on. As Union victory became inevitable, the permanently altered view of blacks and slavery made it plain that no state could be reunited unless it abandoned slavery. Moreover, some of the southern and border states that were adopting new governments not only embraced emancipation but also public education, minimum wages on federal projects, a progressive income tax, and the end of debtors' prisons. From the ashes of slavery arose nascent progressivism.

It is one of the great tragedies of history that this pragmatic yet principled president was murdered just as the war ended, since his approach to reconstruction would certainly have been far more intelligent and competent than that of his singularly inept and rebarbative successor. Lincoln knew there were profound challenges ahead, but in the few days he lived following Lee's surrender, he knew the adulation of black people whose freedom he had won and even enjoyed a few moments of real happiness. His generous spirit emerges in the account of how he asked that a band in a crowd outside the White House play "Dixie" because he felt it was one of our best tunes, and the North had captured it fairly.

Many histories of the Civil War are compelling reading. But the account of Lincoln's development in this crucial area is an amazing one and demands not only our admiration of this remarkable man, but also of the historian who has so keenly perceived and superbly told his true story.

a classic book on Lincoln and required reading
By James W. Durney
We see Abraham Lincoln as "The Great Emancipator", who ended slavery in the United States of America. Lincoln's words describe and inspire us, remaining as current as the day they were spoke. We see Lincoln not as the man but as the larger than life occupant of the Lincoln Memorial. Lincoln's 1860 nomination is not because he is or is thought to be "The Great Emancipator". Lincoln is a moderate on slavery and race, acceptable to both wings of the party.
Abraham Lincoln's and Americans journey to emancipation is the subject of this excellent book. America faces serious divisions over slavery but very few over race. The wish to end slavery often did not include what to do with the former slaves. Northern states, with few slaves, accepted gradual emancipation and managed to tolerate their Black population. In the majority of Northern states Blacks could not vote, could not serve on a jury nor could they testify against a White person. Some Northern states essentially ban Blacks. In many more states, they are under server restrictions and required to post bonds to insure good conduct. Garrison said that Illinois is essentially a "slave state" due to the restrictive laws on Blacks.
This is a book about race relations more than about slavery. The majority agreed that slavery is "bad" but cannot see a reasonable exit. Gradual Emancipation is an acceptable answer. Slaves born after a set date become free when they become n years old. The current slaves either remain slaves or become free after n years. This pushes the race problem away, leaving it for another generation to deal with. Immediate Emancipation ends slavery but has few answers to the race question. Colonization is a popular answer. Questions on transporting four million people to Africa or some other location is not answered. Nor is the question of how many Blacks voluntary will leave the United States.
Black rights are the major problem. To avoid full citizenship, "rights" are subdivided into acceptable and unacceptable units. Natural rights, not being enslaved, being allowed to seek work and being secure in your person are acceptable because they enshrined in The Declaration of Independence. Political rights, being able to vote, serve on a jury or testify in court are questionable. The majority of Northern States say no to these rights. A few liberals accept "more intelligent Negros" as possible candidates for political rights. Social rights, being able to mix with whites as equals are not considered. Lincoln spends a good deal of his time answering Democratic attacks in this area.
This is a history of Lincoln's journey from Whig to Republican, from gradual to immediate emancipation from colonization to political rights. America move along with Lincoln, one sometimes ahead of the other but both leading and encouraging the other. It is not an easy journey nor is it a quick one.
Eric Foner is an excellent author and historian. This well-written book is informative and easy read. Forner is careful to maintain a balanced approach and never descends into bashing, Lincoln, America or the South. This should be a classic book on Lincoln and required reading.
