It just doesn't have the detail I wanted.
There's a lot to like here. Stekel covers everything, starting with selecting the probes and printing the arrays. Next comes raw array analysis - scanning, image processing, and measuring the effects of the array itself on the results. That covers the first six chapters. The next three go over analysis of the result, one more chapter covers experimential design, and the last chapter discusses storing, labelling, and sharing the data. Some of those topics, like experiment design, address issues that most other authors neglect.
Still, I came away feeling that I had read only half of each chapter. Going back, it turned out that I hadn't missed anything that really was there. I missed a lot, though. For example, probe selection includes a discussion of self-hybridization - good stuff. It stopped short of giving me any clear idea how much self-complementarity is too much. It mentioned DNA melting points, but without enough information for me to understand what is really melting, or how or why to choose one melting point over another. Handling of raw array data discussed Loess regression as a way to cancel out process differences across a single array. Again, it's good stuff, but what exactly is a Loess regression? Expression analysis mentions Spearman correlation as an alternative to Pearson correlation - it give Pearson's formulas, but not Spearman's. Later, when the author does give a "formula" for selecting sample sizes, it turns out to be some macro reference for some stat package. Throughout the book, I felt the same lack: I learned the names of many things, but not what they really are.
Maybe this book is OK for a first introduction. If you've had that introduction and want to take the second steps, this book probably won't meet your needs.

A Good Book for Microarray Bioinformatics

I rate this book a 5 star because I believe this book is one of best bioinformatics books which make it possible for the biologists to understand the bioinformatic tools inside of microarray technology. For me the most useful chapters include Sequence Databases for Microarrays, Computer Design of Oligonucleotide Probes, Normalisation, Measuring and Quantifying Microarray Variability, Analysis of Differentially Expressed Genes. As a three-years microarray user, I still get a lot information after I read this book. However, no any bioinformatic books are perfect and complete. There are also some limitations in this book. The author sometimes did not provide detailed information on some biostatistic analysis tools and only provided some references for reading. Since a lot of bioinformatic tools are still in the trial stage and need to be improved, we can not blame the author for the incompleteness.
As a 250-pages bioinformatics book, I believe, this book is very informative and useful for microarray users and biologists who are tired of understanding the abstract biostatistic equations.

Very good introduction to microarray bioinformatics

This is a very clearly written and easy to read introduction to microarray bioinformatics. It builds a basic basis of knowledge in a very short time, so it is a great start for beginners in the field. By the end of the book you also have a pretty clear sense of what you might want to read in more depth. It does not treat any of the subjects in great detail, but does have reading suggestions for each chapter, including books and original papers. Also, the bioinformatics concepts are explained in a very logical and easy to grasp manner, so the biologist or physician with no computational background will find it particularly useful.

In The Grand Design, they explain that according to quantum theory, the cosmos does not have just a single existence or history, but rather that every possible history of the universe exists simultaneously. When applied to the universe as a whole, this idea calls into question the very notion of cause and effect. But the “top-down” approach to cosmology that Hawking and Mlodinow describe would say that the fact that the past takes no definite form means that we create history by observing it, rather than that history creates us. The authors further explain that we ourselves are the product of quantum fluctuations in the very early universe, and show how quantum theory predicts the “multiverse”—the idea that ours is just one of many universes that appeared spontaneously out of nothing, each with different laws of nature.

Along the way Hawking and Mlodinow question the conventional concept of reality, posing a “model-dependent” theory of reality as the best we can hope to find. How can we understand the world in which we find ourselves? Over twenty years ago I wrote A Brief History of Time, to try to explain where the universe came from, and where it is going. But that book left some important questions unanswered. Why is there a universe--why is there something rather than nothing? Why do we exist? Why are the laws of nature what they are? Did the universe need a designer and creator?

It was Einstein’s dream to discover the grand design of the universe, a single theory that explains everything. However, physicists in Einstein’s day hadn’t made enough progress in understanding the forces of nature for that to be a realistic goal. And by the time I had begun writing A Brief History of Time, there were still several key advances that had not yet been made that would prevent us from fulfilling Einstein’s dream. But in recent years the development of M-theory, the top-down approach to cosmology, and new observations such as those made by satellites like NASA’s COBE and WMAP, have brought us closer than ever to that single theory, and to being able to answer those deepest of questions. And so Leonard Mlodinow and I set out to write a sequel to A Brief History of Time to attempt to answer the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe and Everything. The result is The Grand Design, the product of our four-year effort.

In The Grand Design we explain why, according to quantum theory, the cosmos does not have just a single existence, or history, but rather that every possible history of the universe exists simultaneously. We question the conventional concept of reality, posing instead a "model-dependent" theory of reality. We discuss how the laws of our particular universe are extraordinarily finely tuned so as to allow for our existence, and show why quantum theory predicts the multiverse--the idea that ours is just one of many universes that appeared spontaneously out of nothing, each with different laws of nature. And we assess M-Theory, an explanation of the laws governing the multiverse, and the only viable candidate for a complete "theory of everything." As we promise in our opening chapter, unlike the answer to the Ultimate Question of Life given in the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, the answer we provide in The Grand Design is not, simply, "42."

Starred Review. The three central questions of philosophy and science: Why is there something rather than nothing? Why do we exist? Why this particular set of laws and not some other? No one can make a discussion of such matters as compulsively readable as the celebrated University of Cambridge cosmologist Hawking (A Brief History of Time). Along with Caltech physicist Mlodinow (The Drunkard's Walk), Hawking deftly mixes cutting-edge physics to answer those key questions. For instance, why do we exist? Earth occupies a "Goldilocks Zone" in space: just the perfect distance from a not-too-hot star, with just the right elements to allow life to evolve. On a larger scale, in order to explain the universe, the authors write, "we need to know not only how the universe behaves, but why." While no single theory exists yet, scientists are approaching that goal with what is called "M-theory," a collection of overlapping theories (including string theory) that fill in many (but not all) the blank spots in quantum physics; this collection is known as the "Grand Unified Field Theories." This may all finally explain the mystery of the universe's creation without recourse to a divine creator. Whether or not critics bought into Hawking's and Mlodinow's mind-bending exploration of "the grand design" depended to some extent on each reviewer's familiarity with physics. The Spectator thought that the authors should have provided some answers instead of just introducing mathematical concepts with "such reckless abandon," while the New York Times Book Review called the book condescending and, more seriously, M-theory "somewhat disappointing... a patchwork quilt rather than a fine, seamless garment." Yet other critics felt that the authors did a fine job of clearly explaining why modern science may soon provide answers to large philosophical questions. As one critic, a professor of physics said, "Deep stuff, indeed. Maybe in the end the whole multiverse idea will actually turn out to be right!" (Washington Post). Or, as physicist Fred Bortz claims, possibly wrong. Only time may tell.

Needs Proof Read!

My Business Math class changed to this book for our summer quarter this year. Personally I believe this was a big mistake. Throughout the quarter there has been alot of confusion and aggravation with this book not only for us, the students, but for the instructor as well. The book is riddled with errors and typos throughout the text, including the answer key. There have been countless times reading the text and working through practice problems were you'll catch the author inverting numbers throughout the solution to the problem.

It's also common practice to find that the answer key in the back of the book has the wrong answers. Which is frustrating to do homework and not be able to find their answer until next week when the instructor has to do the problem to find the book's wrong. Makes studying for our weekly in class quizes and tests an even bigger challenge then what It should be.

Some of the formula's are even incorrect or have typographical errors. Our instructor even told us he had to call his son on Wall Street to confirm that he's not "crazy" and that the formula they were using wasn't correct.

I give this book 2 stars because the chapters and formulas that are correct do make sense in an easy to understand way. But as for a bussiness math textbook, they have a long way to go to be considered a "professional" resource. I don't know much about the editor or whoever else read over this book, but it might help if they had a strong backround in math so that they can catch these errors before publishing a textbook ment to teach people the proper way to use formulas and calculations in their business.

I suggested to the Dean of Sutedents that they would've probably had better luck using Business Math For Dummies at this rate. If you're looking to buy this book, I strongly suggest waiting for a revised edition and wait for a few hundred reviews before spending your money.

Decent Introdution To Business/Consumer math

Before reading this book, I already understood many of the concepts presented, but I had never learned them "formally", so I gave it a shot. I liked the format, the concepts were presented in small portions with quizzes after each portion (then a final quiz for the whole chapter). If I had to do it over again, I would definitely choose this book.

I bought this book as a refresher I recently graduated from an MBA program and I thought it would be a good Refresher for business math the book is simple well-written contains answers in the back I think the book is formatted well that follows a logical progression from simple real world mathematics 2 more complicated business problems offers step-by-step explanations as well as practice problems as well as reviews and quizzes overall I think it's a good product I still continue to use it I can't think of any downsides or negative things about the book currently

love it!

i actually found this book but for base at a garage sale, when my friend told me it wasn't for violin i ordered this one. i love how it gives you exercises and breaks things down for you, it's helped me and i definitely recommend it to someone who is just beginning to learn to play the violin! seeing as that i never payed attention in music class when i was a kid, thinking that i wouldn't want to learn to play an instrument anyway, this book has helped me in remembering the strings and how to read sheet music. the basic stuff at least.
