About the Author
Dr. Jill Ammon-Wexler is doctor of psychology and 45-year pioneer brain/mind researcher. She is also a “life adventurer” with a passion for finding, and then pushing beyond, her personal “limits.” She has pursued higher states of consciousness since her late teen years, first climbed a mountain alone at age 16, and then had to find her way down the mountain in a wild snow storm. She also became lost several times in the deeply hidden wildernesses of California, navigating out by the stars. Over the years she was chased by a white shark, and went eye-to-eye with a wild mountain lion (on purpose). During her university years she studied with amazing leaders like Fritz Perls, Virginia Satir, Soygal Rinpoche and Alan Watts. She also walked on fire, did sweat lodges, studied with shamanic elders, and become the holder of a coyote talking stick. After receiving her Masters degree in psychology, she shaved her head and spent 6 months in a monastic Buddhist retreat. She then completed a PhD in psychology, became a clinical hypnotherapist and certified clinical biofeedback provider, and began her professional career as a pioneer mind power trainer and personal transformation coach. A Skimpy, Superficial, Over-Priced Promo Book

I read this book in about twenty minutes. For the skimpy amount of superficial, mostly recycled, material it provides, it is overpriced at $3.99. And as another reviewer points out, the chapters are short and just serve as "plugs for products, services, and retreats."

The author has little knowledge of yoga and esoteric spirituality. She just took a catchy occult subject--the third eye-- and focused on it exclusive of a full, or integral, yogic context, and even her "focusing" was unfocused, bereft of depth.

The author says "Kundalini" means "illumination" or "enlightenment." It doesn't. It means "the Coiled One." And when you awaken Kundalini, you experience this "uncoiling" as a powerful force-flow that can literally rock you body and cause your head to jerk.

The author has no idea about enlightenment, the enlightenment process, or the human soul. The "seat of the soul" is not located in the third eye; it is located in the spiritual Heart-center (Hridaya, not the Anahata heart chakra), just to the right of the center of one's chest. (For more information on this, see the texts "Talks with Sri Ramana Maharshi" and "The Triadic Heart of Siva."). The key to spiritual enlightenment, or Self (or Soul)-Realization, is cutting the Heart-knot (via Spirit-power, or "Shakti, the "Higher, or descending, Kundalini).

Even the subtitle of the book--"Develop you Higher Self"--reflects a limited understanding of the Self. The Lower Self cannot "develop" the Higher Self. The Higher, or True, Self, is always already perfectly developed, and when, in the case of an Initiated (or Spirit-empowered) yogi, the lower (or ego) self utterly empties itself, then the Higher, or True, Self shines through.

The author talks about developing ESP and psi abilities through opening your third eye, but that is highly improbable. The renowned magician James Randi has for many years offered a million dollars to anyone who can demonstrate psychic abilities under laboratory conditions. So far no one has collected.

Please note that followers of the author are plastering one-star reviews of this book with negative votes. Right before the New Year, I had 49 added to this review in a day! I re-submitted my review to "purge it" of this legion of negative votes.

I wish I could think of a single reason to recommend this book, but I can't.

Note: After I resubmitted my review, it got 12 of 12 positive votes, then in the last few days, 26 negative votes were plastered on it. Lots of shenanigans are going on with the reviews of this book.

The owners manual to your mind

WOW! Where do I start?!? Well, I will start by asking if you have ever seen an Indian or East Asian with a red dot on their forehead between the eyes? This symbolizes the "third eye" or the "eye of wisdom" in Hinduism and Buddhism. Why would they mark this permanently on the outside of their body? It must symbolize something very important. The third eye is also referred to as the "Tenth Gate", and unlike the other nine gates it leads not to the sensory or outer world, but the world of inner spaces and of higher consciousness. In other words it is what connects our spirit to our physical body.

Did you know that if you become self-aware, you can be driven by a higher motivation and as a result achieve more than you had ever dreamed possible? It is scientifically proven (and explained in the book) that if we are in survival mode and do not have our basic external necessities like food and water taken care of, then we stay in a primal state and are actually unable to use the parts of our brain to experience states of higher consciousness. Sometimes I wonder if the general public needs to be kept in a state of constant survival mode so that they can never even achieve a level of higher consciousness.

The information in this book is far over due to be published, and I sincerely thank the author for being brave enough to publish a book that is not fully accepted by the mainstream as of yet. But the next big thing in science and medicine has to do with the electrical and energy systems of our bodies and this knowledge although unfamiliar to the mainstream has had many researchers give everything to the study of this information... even their lives.

Since we were very young, we have learned things, or actually been programmed by our education system and textbooks, yet no one in these systems has been able to do a good or even partially satisfying job of explaining exactly where our consciousness originates. What is it that separates us from the monkeys? Why is it that mainstream science says that we only use around 10% of our brain, yet they never explain why? Or what the other 90% is used for.

At the very least this book is mandatory reading; simply because it is thought provoking, enlightening, and ahead of it's time, and at the most it is the beginning of your new life. Want to turn your life around and be successful in anything you choose? Start with this book; it is the owner's manual to your mind.

Shallow Tips, Tentative Science

The author presented very little that was new in the 15 tips presented. Most of the tips, while valid, you will already have learned with basic meditation techniques. One tip is to practice meditation for 15 to 20 years. That hardly qualifies as a tip. The main exception was a recommendation to train your brain to generate specific wavelengths of brain activity. For this, the author refers you to her proprietary audio tapes. Gee thanks, why did I buy this book again?

While the parapsychology studies presented in the book are interesting and compelling, in most cases you cannot identify a direct relationship between the study findings and the 15 tips. Some of the material is old, such as MRI's of Tibetan monks.

I was not interesting in developing ESP or manifesting any other psi phenomena. Those readers who are will be very disappointed. The author never identifies a specific technique that is particularly useful for cultivating psi abilities. In my own case I was hoping to find anything relative to the mind-body interaction and found none.

Look elsewhere.

Probably the BEST book I've ever read

In over three decades of my life...I have not read a book I've enjoyed more. This is incredible writing, research and wisdom. I learned more about human nature that I thought one could know. This author does an amazing job. I feel like I'm THERE. The story is as good as a fiction read; and because it's true, you'll be blown away. Whatever you think about the topic (I had no interest in politics or these women), read it. You'll get sucked in. I read the nearly 1000 page book in a week. I could NOT put it down.
You will learn some heart-stopping secrets about them and JFK too in this book. Other books about them were often edited BY them and approved. This author, however, has access to the best information but NO Kennedy had any say in what he put in or left out. Be prepared to enjoy the ride.

Kennedy Women Strength

I ordered this book because I am writing another novel and I wanted to get a good feeling of politically astute societal women through time. I found myself vacillating between pity and envy for the lives of the Kennedy women.
The men they each chose seemed to be so self absorbed, yet missing the value of the women who supported them. The book has given me some great ideas for enhancing the personalities of some of the characters in my new book.
Thank you for the inspiration and for giving me a glimpse behind closed doors.

Kennedy Women Through The Years

This is a very thorough account of multiple generations of Kennedy women, staring with Bridget Murphy who sailed to America from Ireland and became the first Kennedy woman to live in this country. While the book is long, I never found it boring. Each generation has their own fascinating story to tell and I liked how the author flipped between different women every few paragraphs or so. I think that is why the book held my attention for so long. One minute the author would discuss Pat's life in California among movie stars, and the next, talking about Jackie's tenure as First Lady. Highly recommended for Kennedy fans.

Outstanding Text and Reference not for typical beginners

Howell's book has been around now for 6 editions - you simply do not get to that stage of publishing a technical book without doing many things very well. I have taught advanced statistics to graduate students and professionals in a variety of programs and settings for over 20 years, and

for an advanced basic course in statistics for graduate students or for knowledgeable professionals, I would not teach from any other text for this level of statistics. If graduate students understood most of the content of this text, they would be better equiped researchers than most currently are for sure. It is true that if this book were to be your first treatment of statistics or if your first course was really not all that thorough or was a long time ago, this text might be difficult for you - but not because the text is poorly done. I also refer this text to graduate students, new Ph.D.s, experienced Ph.D.s who are not statistical experts, and other researchers as a desk reference, and I keep it on my desk and keep a copy in my research lab for my research assistants. Graduate students have always consistently strongly praised the book at the end of the semesters when I have used it. Frankly, I suspect other reviewers of this book who give it low marks have ulterior motives such as steering folks to other specific texts. In this veign, I do not personally know the author, but the author David Howell is a highly respected psychologist with true expertise in statistical methods and who served as chair of his department prior up to his relatively recent retirement at the University of Vermont.

Useless

Do not buy this book with the hopes of learning statistics. A much better buy would be Statistical for the Behavioral Sciences by Frederick Gravetter and Larry Wallnau. He gives plenty of examples of researchers or writers who like one method versus another, but very few real examples of what you're doing or why? He does show a very broad knowledge of the origins of statistics, but who's really interested unless you plan on writing a paper on statistics. If you want to understand and learn statistics, buy another book. I am a student and I've seen good and bad. This is the first review I've written, but I felt compelled. The textbook is unnecessarily wordy. He takes 3 paragraphs to say something that could have been clearer in a sentence. This guy even spends a great deal of time on formulas, he admits we're not using anymore. Then why include them in the text. If you purchase this one, be sure to buy another one to supplement it. Unless you already have a pretty good foundation. This textbook is a lot of knowledgeable jargon. The two good things about the text: 1) He includes information about statistical software - a lot of statistic books ignore them. 2)It's not the only statistics book we have to choose from.

I LOVED RYAN!

First, I loved Lietha's "The Doctor and the Assassin" book. My favorite character of all time was Nick Castile, so I was looking for another book that had Nick's characters as the leading men. I took a chance on Retribution,. And wouldn't you know it -- Ryan was a really close second to Nick as far as his characteristics, looks, etc. I really got into this book. (Spoiler alert): close to the end of the book, Lietha actually did bring back Nick and his brother for a short time! Fantastic! Comes to find out, they (Nick and Ryan) worked together in the past. I loved it! It has lots of action, and romance. Keep up the good work Lietha! Write about more characters like Nick and Ryan! I'll be purchasing those books!

Wonderful story! Action, mystery and romance. Oh my!!

The hero is hot, a well oiled "machine" of a man who comes to realize that he is human after all and that you shouldn't judge a book by its cover. The heroine is a strong woman, who has been neglected and betrayed by the ones who should love her the most.

This story is action packed, a flair of mystery and many twists and turns. There are some hot love scenes too! They save each other in different ways, but you have to read the story to find out how. You won't be disappointed

Great characters, great storyline. I loved the surprise tie-in with another book...I won't spoil it :). Good HEA and great alpha male! I only wish the epilogue was further in the future to give you a taste but what was said was good.

This is an excellent reference book that anyone working with fluids or piping should have on the shelf. The asking price is a bit silly since the newest edition of this book can be purchased directly from the Crane Co. for $60. Original price when I bought mine in 1990 was $8.

Darren Shan never disappoints

Larten Crepsley's life could never be considered an "easy" one. He was born into the most difficult of circumstances and left his hometown as a known killer. He has been in and out of one awful adventure after another --- mostly not of his choosing. But the life of a vampire, living in a human and demonic world, would not be likely to run that smoothly. Sometimes, however, wonderful things can happen. Larten Crepsley has found love.

Love makes many changes in Larten's life. He is no longer known as Larten Crepsley, but as Vur Horston. He is living in Paris, in the early 1900s, the Paris of Bram Stoker and his famous novel DRACULA. The beautiful Alicia Dunyck isn't aware of his previous life because the past he reveals to her is fabricated. How can he tell her he's a vampire? The relationship with Alicia is cemented once she meets the little orphan Gavner Purl, who, according to Larten, is his ward. Though Larten has watched after the child, he is also responsible for the deaths of the boy's parents and everyone on that ship in Greenland (that is yet another story). So he has carefully avoided any emotional ties to the child.

Alicia bubbles over with motherly love, and a stronger bond is formed among the three. This is all very nice except for the fact that Larten has lied about his past and feels tremendous remorse over murdering Gavner's parents and all the ship's occupants. Things still manage to go very well, and in an emotional moment, he actually asks Alicia to be his bride. For the reader, it's plain to see that something very wrong is going to happen, and it does.

One night, at an art exhibition, Larten encounters another vampire. Though at first frightened that he will now be discovered, he realizes, with a sense of relief, that the vampire is none other than an old friend from his childhood known as Tanish Eul. The renewed friendship springs to life, and Tanish introduces Larten to his own circle of rather shady friends. His warmth toward Gavner also allows him into Larten's life in a more intimate way. Gavner grows to love and trust the old vampire and affectionately calls him Uncle Tanish.

Before long, Tanish offers Larten some wonderful opportunities with promises that all will be well. If not for Tanish's greed and deceptive ways, it might have been a happy partnership. Before he knows it, Larten is pulled into a conflict with the vampaneze (a clan who hate vampires) and accused not only of murdering a young woman, but also of being a vampire himself by the very person he thought was a best friend. With only moments to spare, he escapes the city, once again having to live as a hunted/haunted outcast. He also leaves behind his life with a heartbroken Alicia, who now knows his true identity but not his real story.

Where can he go? Where can he find sanctuary? Larten is again tormented and searching for his own peace. Perhaps it's time for a return to Vampire Mountain. Would they accept him back into their folds? Times do change. What are his chances?

Darren Shan knows what his readers want, and he never disappoints them. The third book in this prequel series to Cirque du Freak brings blood, battles and gore aplenty. The redheaded vampire is a character with depth, feeling and keen intelligence. Fans will be both horrified by and delighted with the twists Shan gives Larten's tragic story. It's true; a good vampire (is that an oxymoron?) never dies, though he might cherish that possibility.

What will happen when, years later, Larten meets Gavner as a young, angry man? Readers, get ready for the next installment!

How Long Until Book 4?

Picking up exactly where Ocean of Blood left off, Palace of the Damned is the penultimate book in this prequel (to Circus of the Damned) quartet. After killing the ship's entire crew - as revenge for their killing Malora after his 'vampiracy' was revealed to the crew, is on the run. With a baby in his care - keeping it safe from the cannibal on the ship - Larten now has more to worry about than his own needs.

Tired of the vampiric life, Larten no longer has the thirst for he hunt and hides out in Paris as a human. It is there where he finds love - and maybe even some happiness.

But how long can Larten really hide out as a human before his inner darkness and he's forced to return to the dark, to his clan. And will he be safe anywhere or will his enemies find him?

One thing's for sure, one way or another, Larten's path is sure to be perilous and lead to deaths.

Palace of the Damned is great, it brings out more of Larten's humanity while also contrasting that with just how not human he is. After the first book introduced us to Larten's true human life and his beginnings as a assistant and the second brought in more of the vampire politics, it's great to see a different side to Larten.

As someone who's reading this prequel series before reading Circque du Freak, I know that I am missing some of what readers of that series will get out of this series. The characters that are in this series, I'm sure will pop up in the latter series (at least some of them) and whether you read that first or this first, it'll be great to know their back stories as well.

It didn't feel like there was as much action in this installment as in the others, but it definitely brought a necessary bit of Larten's life to light.

This series definitely stops in the middle of scenes and on cliffhangers and Palace of the Damned's ending is no different - it will have you almost counting the days until May when the final Saga of Larten Crepsley book releases.

I actually enjoyed this book for class

From a student perspective (ie. having to write weekly 2000 word essays pertaining to this book), I have to say my prof made a wonderful decision to choose this book. The topics were very up-to-date and thought provoking. It's nice to discuss the future of robots, cell phone radiation, and have current heated topics in class. I'm sick of hearing about the abortion, death penalty, right to bare arms topics. Students over used those discussions in high schoool. Basically, I give an A+ for the interesting topics.
The book is also setup in a very student friendly fashion. Topics are given a 1 page summary relating the pros and cons of 2 writers opinions before plunging into their papers. After the 2 opinions are presented, there is also a page for points to ponder afterward. These two features proved very handy when having to do class discussions over something you read a week before. Skimming for quick recall can be a good thing!
Although I wouldn't have bought this book if I didn't have to, I believe it is an excellent choice for profs to use in class.

This book covers some major topics like Gentically modified food, electric cars and offers a pro/con on them from various academics, government etc. I needed it for a class, however, the material changes from year to year but it raises a lot of ethical and moral issues that we rarely consider.

As a required text for college, it was rather interesting

Normally, textbooks can be a bit of a droll when they are assigned as textbooks but in all fairness, I found this book to be rather interesting. It ranged across numerous topics involving sciences, innovations/dangers of technology and how society perceives them. It gives you two viewpoints from respected individuals, one is usually for the topic and the other is against it. The topics ranged from cancer induced by cellphones (aka radio waves), to environmental issues, and all the way to transhumanism. To be honest, it was a rather enjoyable read.
