Just entertaining.

In-depth book reviews really aren't my cup of tea because a lot of the content can be so subjective at times. With that being said, though, I found that the book was a relatively easy read in that it was entertaining enough to keep me going. Could it be that I'm a bit biased because I fiend for just about anything Warcraft? Sure. But I imagine a lot of potential readers are in the same boat.

Worth adding to a collection? Absolutely. It's just not an amazing or super excellent story; not many plot twists or surprises, not much character development, and there's a few parts here and there that fill drawn out strictly for the purpose of filler material, but still worth the read.

About the Author

Dan Fullerton is a physics teacher at Irondequoit High School in Rochester, NY, an adjunct professor of microelectronic engineering at Rochester Institute of Technology, and director of APlusPhysics.com.

He lives in Webster, NY, with his beautiful wife, indefatigable daughters, and sleepy dog. He was named a NY State Master Physics Teacher in 2014.

Not even close, and there are much better out there.

This book covers the topics of the new exam, technically, but it misses the mark badly on what the new questions are like. Page through the previews Amazon has here, and you'll see example problems that are pure calculation--"Find the speed of..." "Find the acceleration..." But that's not the true nature of the new test at all. On the AP Physics 1 exam, you can expect questions closer to:

"You throw a ball of mass m up at speed v. It reaches a height of h before it starts to come down. What could you change in order to make the ball reach a height of 2h before coming down? a) Throw the ball twice as fast. b) Throw the ball sqrt(2) times as fast. c) Throw a ball that is half as massive at the same speed v. d) Throw the ball 4 times as fast."

Note what you don't see as any of the options: a solution in meters per second (or any other unit, for that matter). Contrast this to the problems you see in the previews. You don't have to take my word (or anyone else's, for that matter), by the way; College Board released several sample physics problems on their website. Look them over and look at the ones in this book; they're not even close.

So although you can get a glimpse at the topics covered in this book, and read what the definition of momentum is and such, the practice problems included here are beyond misleading and shouldn't be used for AP Physics 1 at all. The McGraw Hill guide hits much closer to the mark, as should the as-yet-unreleased Barrons and Princeton Review guides. And if you'd prefer a textbook full of problems that resemble the new course material, check out Knight-Jones-Field's 3rd edition (pink, water drop on cover) or Etkina-VanHuevelen's 1st edition (bicycle wheel on cover). As well, old Cutnell-Johnson textbooks (pre-8th edition) are cheap to get used copies of nowadays and contain some concept-first-problem-second "group solving" problems at the end of each chapter that are similar to the Qualitative-Quantitative Reasoning questions (QQR) that will show up in the short answer section of the new exam.

Any one of these options would be a much better source for the new exam than this horrible book that puts "AP Physics 1" in the title but contains none of the new-style questions.

Wish I would have had this in engineering school

After graduating from engineering school and working in the industry for a number of years, I'm interesting seeing how new textbooks present physics concepts to see if I would have benefited from their teaching approach. I feel the methods presented in this book would have better helped me in my time as a student. I always learned the best in deconstructing the example problems. In this book you have a huge number of problems to learn from. I'd give this book my thumbs up.

Those who prefer a natural world over a perfect world

Please don't be discouraged by the negative review, its a story and it contains a rape and other violence but its always in the context of the story and the setting. Its actually a small book, not a lot of excess descriptions, just the bare essentials that tell the story. Its a fiction but now its not so fictional as it was when I first read This Perfect Day several decades ago. I don't want to write a spoiler review now in 2013 when the world technology in the book is closer, right here now.
There's a situation in the book, with the turn of a page, where suddenly everything that Chip, the main character, understands about his past is changed.
For a few seconds I felt what Chip felt, a real shock and disorientation but that's why I read mysteries and science fictions, to be surprised.
It was a once in a lifetime kind of shock to me when I read that page. Such a delightful switch as happened to Chip, who had one green eye and one brown eye when he was forced to open a door, a gun at his back, happened to me the reader. What's on the other side of the door is... unsuspected,at least by both Chip and I. Its rare to feel in my body that kind of thrill when I'm reading a book.

Ira Levin is a master at sudden revelations that change the direction of his story drastically. Remember The Stepford Wives? And Rosemary's Baby?

The world is operated efficiently by Uni, a computer which Chip's grandfather had helped create. He'd taken young Chip to see Uni, it was no secret that 'Uni' was the decision maker. When every aspect of a person's life is decided on and arranged by a program, it would seem to be an anxiety free world. There's no need to make decisions, everyone eats the same food: total cakes. It rains only at night, so no one is inconvenienced: ones sex life is arranged; whether one will marry is decided: and one's mate has been selected.

Nobody needs to make decisions. The word 'hate' is the real four letter word, everyone is equal. Every individual is required to wear a bracelet and swipe it at every reader, its a reportable offense to pass a reader and not swipe, so one's location is always known.

Yet there are those who don't want to live in this perfect world, they want freedom from a pre-designed life. Chip begins to try to find them, and that's what the book is about. I enjoyed the shock very much, but technology was so different when I read the book, than it is now. That kind of shock may not be possible to the person that carries a smart phone now.

Its almost a prophetic book, but most of the science fictions I read 7 decades ago have materialized, so I've been shocked many times to have witnessed the fictions become real. This Perfect Day is not like Orwell's 1984 because everyone is equal, well almost, but it was close to Isaac Asimov's Foundation series, in my opinion and also his The End of Eternity. That's a book which I love very much and highly recommend. Someone has to program Uni!
