it works!
By Nom dePlume
Using only this book and a few random tips from strangers, I picked up telemarking in two days. (I also started with 25 years of alpine experience.) This book is clear, concise, and effective. It made all the difference in the world in getting me skiing expert trails reasonably well by the end of my second day. I am nowhere near handling moguls, glades, ice, cornices, etc., but I did have twenty or so graceful, linked turns in a steep bowl

Free Your Heel, Free Your Mind
By Joe Malin
Paul Parker wrote the definitive discourse on off-the-run skiing with his first edition of this book. Time has only improved it. Every skier from the expert backcountry telemarker to the improving bunny-hill snowplower MUST read this book. What Mr. Parker has done is to condense all the theories and techniques and observations of the skiing community into a simple, progressive instructional guide. He starts with very basic snowplowing and ends with telemarking, and in between shows how all the different styles are linked and flow into each other. All of it is described with marvelous clarity and engaging style. The 2nd edition adds stories, commentaries, and pictures which motivate the reader to get out into the snow and play! My only complaint is that they don't publish a waterproof small-size edition that I can take out skiing with me!

The Bible of Learning to Telemark.
By Bruce Katz
The book is wonderful.
It is abound with simple, practical, and easy to remember helpful hints;I call them little golden nuggets of information that you take with you on each run, or even turn, as you practice your downhill ski skills On or Off Piste.
It also has a wonderful introduction to the history of skiing and a very honest analysis/assessment of telemark gear.
It is incredibly suited for all beginner and intermediate tele-skiers.

Short and sweet
By Jeff Ward
I was expecting something a tiny bit longer I suppose, so I was a little shocked how tiny this little book is. Still, is it rich with illustrations and I think it was worth the money. It does serve as a good introduction to the subject.

When it is discovered that a disturbed young man named Lucifer has the ability to foresee the death of those around him, Seff recruits the boy into his gang and uses his powers of premonition to evil ends, extracting ransom from rich victims who have been told of their impending death. During the course of her investigation Modesty's cover is blown, and she finds herself trapped on Seff's island stronghold and must use all of her guile and brains to escape.

"I wouldn't know, Johnnie. I don't know what it's like to be dead."
By Rennie Petersen
Modesty Blaise's good friend John Dall can't understand why Modesty insists on risking her life to try to save the life of a person with an incurable and debilitating mental problem. "You really think he's better off alive?" he asks Modesty.

"I wouldn't know, Johnnie. I don't know what it's like to be dead," replies Modesty.

That's good enough for me. :-)

"I, Lucifer" (1967) is the third book in the Modesty Blaise series of action thrillers written by Peter O'Donnell back in the 1960's, 1970's and 1980's. This is a series of books that I really love, and you may wish to take a look at my "So You'd Like To" guide here at Amazon.com about reading books by Peter O'Donnell.

Although I love this series of books I've decided to only give four stars to "I, Lucifer". The reason is that the supernatural plays a very important role in the story, and I'm too much of a skeptic to believe in such things. In addition, a major coincidence occurs that also reduces the believability of the plot in my mind.

The bad guys are always a major element in a Modesty Blaise story. In "I, Lucifer" we meet Seff and his wife Regina, two elderly puppeteers who turned to crime when they could no longer find work due to the closure of the vaudeville theaters. Unlikely villains, but they are described as being so evil that one feels a chill running down one's back.

Seff and his wife have developed a diabolical way of threatening people and demanding protection money. But they happened to have Ren Vaubois (a friend of Modesty Blaise and Willie Garvin) on their list of targets, and he refused to pay when threatened. And Ren happens to be together with Modesty and Willie when a gang tries to kill him, to set an example for the other targets.

This is the start of a long and complicated story. First Modesty and Willie have to find the bad guys, then they suffer a major setback, and then we are led to the exciting final confrontation.

The high point in this book, in my opinion, is when Modesty and Willie are forced to fight a duel to the death against each other. Of course, I can't reveal what happens, but as usual Peter O'Donnell has created a story with many twists and surprises. And, as usual, the very special relationship between Modesty and Willie is an important and appealing part of the book.

This book introduces Stephen Collier, a recurring figure in several of the later Modesty Blaise books. I have mixed feelings about Stephen Collier, and am never really sure about what it is that Modesty sees in him.

One final point I'll mention is that the paperback edition of this book contains a couple of typographical errors not present in the original hardcover edition. Amazing as it sounds in our post-PC era, the text of books must have been manually re-entered back then when a book was copied from hardcover to paperback.

In conclusion, a great Modesty Blaise adventure, but not one of my favorites because of the emphasis on a certain supernatural ability of one of the characters in the story.

Nobody does it better!
By Naomi Johnson
I'm a long-time big-time fan of the Modesty Blaise books. O'Donnell does a nifty job of combining action/adventure with humor and drama. This title is my sentimental favorite probably because this is the one in which the recurring character of sharp-witted, self-professed coward Stephen Collier is introduced. Collier is the Everyman we can identify with, who allows us as readers to partake of the action and observe Modesty and sidekick Willie Garvin's antics without pretending in any way to be their peer. Like Collier the reader is a passenger on this wild caper - you may hold your breath at times and burst out laughing at others. This book has all the hallmarks of a Blaise/Garvin outing: Ingenious villains, a Garvin girl story, wit, wonderfully detailed combat sequences -- if you've never read a Modesty Blaise book, no need to begin at the beginning because this book easily stands on its own and is thrilling enough to induce you to read the others.

Best of a good series
By Raul S Reyes
I loved the Modesty Blaise tales when they came out in the Sixties and seventies. All were good. I loved the interaction between Modesty and Willie. (By the way, anyone else notice the similarities with Skilly and Two-knife in Jerry Pournelle's stories of Falkenberg's Legion?) The other characters, including Modesty's and Garvin's love interests, were also interesting and well drawn, (although some of Willie's girls were a bit over the top). I Lucifer has one of the more interesting plots; a young man who can predict death with almost 90% accuracy, and thinks he is Satan, and the villains who take control of him for monetary gain. O'Donnell always had good villains for Modesty and Willie to foil, and this tale takes all their wits and skills. A good action spy-thriller with a horror/occult twist...

The Blood Covenant, by H. Clay Trumbull

The Blood Covenant is the most solemn, binding agreement possible between two parties. Perhaps one of the least understood, and yet most important and relevant factors in the covenant relationships that God has chosen to employ in His dealings with man, is the blood covenant. This covenant of life and death spans the entire sacrificial system of the Old Testament, and is the basis for the act of Communion in the Church today. “The author seems to prove beyond a doubt that the blood covenant is one of the most ancient and universal institutions. This idea is founded on the representation familiar to Old Testament scholars, that the blood stands for life.” In this volume, which has been sold out and unavailable for generations, you will find truths that will bless every pastor, every teacher, every serious Christian desiring a deeper knowledge of God and His covenants with man.

Thorough yet misleading
By NYC Fitness,family& finds
This book is definately worth reading as it is VERY thorough in its research on blood covenant with the Bible and ancient peoples. HOWEVER- what I disagree with - is what Mr. Trumbull semms to infer is that God uses blood covenant as it is something ancient people would understand ( similar to God using agricultural metaphors throughout Bible) RATHER than GOD initiated Blood covenant ( and it started w/ Adam and Eve- animals being killed to cover their sin ( animal skins to cover their nakedness rather than leaves- and Mr. Trumbull starts with Cain and Abel- skipping the Adam-Eve record which I find puzzling))It would seem the ancients use and knowledge of blood covenant COULD be the devil counterfeiting/ or distracting from GOD's blood covenant ,God's intention and importance of the PROPER sacrificial blood- Old an NEW testament.

What I found helpful is /was all the ancients knowledge of blood covenant. As modern society- is very 'bloodless" and I don't the modern Christian church really gets it on blood covenant- what a HUGE deal it is- and the blood of Christ. This book will help with this. It is very scholalrly in tone-but worth the work to read it.

Classic reference!
By E. L. Bess
Trumbull breaks new ground in exploring a topic of theological interest which he states 'has been strangely overlooked by biblical critics and biblical commentators generally, in these later centuries.' This is the covenant of blood, a ritual custom of great antiquity and widespread, even universal, pervasiveness. He writes: `The belief seems to have been universal, not only that the blood is the life of the organism in which it originally flows, but that in its transfer from one organism to another the blood retains its life, and so carries with it a vivifying power.'

It isn't through literary exploration alone that this 19th-century scholar elaborates his study. He can boast of his own itinerancy in the Near East while recounting the (often dangerous!) expeditions of others anywhere from Asia to the Americas. As is to be expected across cultures and continents of manifold variegation, the use of the blood in blood-covenant ceremonies is not always the same; it can range anywhere from imbibing to direct physical contact of the openings in the participants, to sprinkling, though it usually consists of some form of intertransfusion. In some cultures a substitutive formula is used such as wine, a symbolism Jesus himself implemented in the institution of the Eucharist. Faint traces of blood-covenant rituals are also found in cultures where no blood is used at all, or any other substitute. The people, however, may be unconscious of the original significance of their practices.

All these customs share a common thread: the bond created by the participants in the act is indissolubly strong, stronger even than biological affinity. Why? As Trumbull explains, `the taking in of another's blood was the acquiring of another's life, with all that was best in that others nature.' To violate the covenant bond was to call against oneself the full fury of cosmic punishment. For instance, those who violated the Mosaic covenant (enacted by sprinkling of animal blood) are said to be `cut off', i.e. their lineage is obliterated through the curse of an untimely death.

In sacrificial ritual animal blood, Trumbull points out, takes the place of human blood. The life of the animal is given to God in the lieu of the devotee's. Therefore the blood/life cannot be consumed. Trumbull reminds us, `it is the life (which the blood is), and not the death (which is merely necessary to the securing of blood), of the victim, that is the means of atonement.' And this is the gravity of the sacrifice, in Christian religion, that God made by his son: 'and this', Trumbull states, 'was the truth of truths which he declared to those whom he instructed.'

Amazon.com Review
The publication of a new book by Sir Isaiah Berlin is always a welcome thing, and The Sense of Reality is no exception. In this volume the eminent scholar gathers nine long essays, eight previously unpublished, on the ideas that have governed European history for the last three centuries: nationalism, liberalism, and especially Marxism. Always seeking to draw moral lessons, Berlin wonders aloud why it is that humans admire men stirred by the lust for power or jealousy of others, or monomaniacal vanity--including notable figures of history like Peter the Great and Napoleon. He proposes a few answers in this study of ideas brought to power, and those answers are always illuminating.

From Library Journal
Berlin was the leading historian of Western ideas in the post-World War II period until his recent death. His essays and interviews have now been published in several volumes. In this representative volume, Berlin traces the rise and fall of Fascist and Communist utopian thinking since the beginning of the 19th century. (LJ 5/1/97)
Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Kirkus Reviews
More of a motley in scope than previous selections of his essays (The Crooked Timber of Humanity, 1991, etc.), this collection nonetheless displays Berlin's superb erudition and always stimulating insights. Berlin's career has spanned the century: He witnessed the 1917 revolution in Petrograd, has had diplomatic postings in Washington and Moscow, and has headed Oxford's Wolfson College, the British Academy, and the Royal Opera. His activities have generated a variety of occasional work--lectures, conference papers, radio programs, etc.--from which this collection has been assembled. All of the pieces are distinguished by his informed fascination with the history of ideas. He returns to one of his favorite topics, the impact of Marxism on Russian thinkers. Tolstoy, Turgenev, and the earlier critic Belinsky are considered together in ``Artistic Commitment: A Russian Legacy,'' an exploration of the aesthetic-utilitarian debate in Russian history. ``Marxism and the International in the Nineteenth Century,'' a lecture given on the First International's centenary, is not only an excellent blow-by-blow account of Marx's dealings with the organization, but a superlative gloss on Marxism as action and theory. The collection's wildest card, an essay on the Indian Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore, manages to be both an excellent summary of Berlin's ideas on nationalism--its attractions and its discontents- -and an appreciation of the underrated pragmatism of the mystic poet. Elsewhere, Berlin dilates magisterially on the links between nationalism and Romanticism and the nuances of political judgment. The two stand-outs, however, are markedly different: In almost Jamesian prose, ``The Sense of Reality'' and ``Philosophy and Government Oppression'' come as close to a personal philosophy of history and intellectual freedom as anything Berlin has written. Penetrating work from the old fox of liberalism, as brilliant in rethinking the past as in recreating its thought. -- Copyright 1997, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Top Customer Review: revisited & revised
By Tom Dolan
"The Sense of Reality" is a collection of nine brilliant essays on "ideas and their history." Each essay is a powerhouse of intellectual electricity. In a style that is stimulating, compelling--and, in the end, irresistible--Berlin writes about ideas with all the nervous energy of an enthusiast. Yet he is clear to the end. He is a great explainer. He distinguishes one thing from another. He takes on the knots, unties them, and lets go of the rope. The effect on the reader is one of exhilarating liberation. One can breathe a little freer. At the same time, one must breathe a little harder. Up here, at high altitude, in the Sierras of the cerebellum, the air is crisp as paper. And our guide, our cicerone, our Isaiah, keeps us skipping--at a dizzying pace!--from mountaintop to mountaintop. As the pages turn, they envelop the reader in a whirlpool of words that round up the ideas--only to plunge them into a deep sea of profound thought. Once again, we gasp for air. Indeed, it seems that, wherever Berlin takes us--the mountains, seas, skies, stars of the mind--we are left dazzled, breathless, tottering on the edge of horizons that become elastic, expansive, infinite . . . . In the title essay, Berlin writes of the "disturbing experience," the "electric shock," of "genuinely profound insight"--which he likens to the touching of nerves deeply embedded in one's most private thoughts and basic beliefs. To that, I say this: no thank you; hands off; keep out. For me, your not-so-humble reviewer, such personally unnerving experiences, shocks, and insights come from life, not books. Not that I don't like to read. I do. But living is more important than reading, and people are more important than books. Excuse me. What, on earth, were we talking about? Ah, yes, now I have it. Of course. Reality. We were talking about reality. Not scientific reality. Human reality. Not the mechanics of Newton. But the Pensees of Pascal. Not knowing for certain. But knowing that one does not know: "there is too much we do not know, but dimly surmise." Very well. But what does Berlin mean by the "sense of reality"? In his essay "Political Judgement," he drops a few more clues. It is "a sense of direct acquaintance with the texture of life." Or: "natural wisdom, imaginative understanding, insight, perceptiveness, and...intuition." Or: "practical wisdom,...a sense of what will 'work' and what will not. It is a capacity...for synthesis rather than analysis, for knowledge in the sense in which trainers know their animals, or parents their children, or conductors their orchestras, as opposed to that in which chemists know the contents of their test tubes, or mathematicians know the rules that their symbols obey." Now you're talking, Ike! Outside the sphere of science--i.e., in real life (personal and political)--the scientific method fails. But a "sense of reality" can work. Really? Why? How can that be? Perhaps it is because a "sense of reality" allows one to grope, feel, touch, grasp...the important things in life..., which slip through the fingers of science. The search for truth (what is; what works) -- whether by scientific method, by "sense of reality," or by some other means -- is one thing. But will is something else. The primary concern of will is not truth but self: me and mine. Will is what drives a person or a people. According to Berlin, will manifests itself individually in Romanticism ("The Romantic Revolution") and collectively in Nationalism ("Kant as an Unfamiliar Source of Nationalism"). Berlin tsks the enlightened rationalists for failing to anticipate the rise of nationalism. But who can foresee the future? Who can come to grips with the wind? Will cannot be grasped from without. It can only be felt from within. Action is the outer manifestation of the inner will. But will without strength is ineffective in the outside world. The strong devour the weak. This truism is so obvious that it is almost always overlooked. But Berlin does not overlook it. He brings it to light. You can feel the fire in his essay on Indian Nationalism ("Rabindranath Tagore and the Consciousness of Nationality"). Such flames from the east are reflected in the west by Machiavelli, Maistre, Sade, Nietzsche, and other "irrationalists." I am intrigued by Berlin's courageous discussion of the soft underbelly of emotional life: shame, humiliation, degradation, frustration, desperation, and rage. Did I leave anything out? I come away from Berlin's book glad to be a human being with human feelings and a "sense of reality" (not to mention a "sense of humor," which, interestingly enough, does not seem to interest Berlin). In the final analysis, there is no final analysis. Berlin does not wrap up, tie down, nail shut. Rather, he picks locks, pries open, leaves ajar.... There is no closure, no end of discussion, no final solution in these pages. Reading them, one gets the feeling that Berlin likes his human beings free and alive. And that puts him at odds with those merciless, cold-hearted, heel-clicking, calculating, conscience-free, anti-life “rationalists” who prefer cadavers and control.

Imaginative insight
By Marc Riese
This profound and enlightening book is one of several anthologies of Isaiah Berlin's essays and speeches. All of the nine pieces in this book are informed, perceptive discussions of concepts ("ideas"), either about history itself, in a broad sense including politics and philosophy, or related to a particular historical time. About half of the pieces are general and are the most relevant to the modern reader and the rest are more specific. The first three pieces are about human sensing of reality as it is relevant to history, politics and repression. The next two deal with socialism and nineteenth century Marxism. The last four pieces deal with the real Romantic revolution, the Russian legacy of artistic commitment, Kant and nationalism, and Tagore and nationality. This anthology collects unpublished works and was edited near the end of Berlin's life and so does not necessarily reflect how Berlin himself might have published the material.

Berlin's erudition, understanding and mountain-top perspective are a pleasure to experience. His sentences are the opposite extreme of the pabulum style of modern twelve-steps-to-whatever books; they are long and rich with thoughtful clauses and parentheses. For example, in a sentence about what makes statesmen successful comes a parenthetical remark that Vico was really a "theologian in historical clothing". The structure of his reasoning is not spelled out in advance. Appreciating Berlin's elaborate style is a matter of taste; some of his musings will hide the simplicity of the underlying point for a modern reader unused to this disappearing style. For example, one could reduce his first essay to the truism that increased abstraction reduces the predictive capacity of a model, but the value of Berlin's text lies exactly in the details. This is the point of his essay: details are important to understand reality and furthermore, "men of genius" have the imaginative insight to see beyond the details to perceive the fundamental assumptions and underlying thinking of a society that others miss.

Although it was no drawback, I personally found little of the humour that some ascribe to his text. Perhaps it came through in his speeches. Berlin makes recurring observations about the revolutionary and moral aspects of an idea. He shows us, for example, that some concepts that people have attempted to force on society are fundamentally insufficient (e.g., Marxism) and their imposition on society is immoral because of the resulting suffering. One wonders if his observation of morals is one of the reasons why he did not describe himself as a historian.

Most of the Berlin anthologies focus on specific themes such as liberty, categories or Russian thinkers. This particular anthology is subtitled "Studies in Ideas and their History", which is accurate enough but, aside from the first three, the pieces in this book are not strongly connected by common themes. I highly recommend reading "The Sense of Reality". Further Berlin essays on the history of ideas can be found in "Against the Current". If you have time for only one Berlin anthology, you may wish to start with some of his most famous pieces that are collected in "The Proper Study of Mankind".

This concludes my review of this book. The following is a summary of some of the key ideas of the first three essays, starting with "Sense of Reality", after which the book is named.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Any given historical era or time point can be characterised by the known economic, social, linguistic and environmental situation of that time. A profound understanding of that time, however, requires knowledge and insight of the underlying assumptions, the implicit realities, "the network of habits and thoughts and feelings" in which the inhabitants of the time lived, which they felt were "too obvious to need mentioning."

"...The quality of depth in thinkers who are professional philosophers or novelists, or men of genius of other kinds, precisely consists in penetrating to one of these great assumptions, embedded in some widespread attitude, and isolating that and questioning it... Everyone will know the quality that I refer to. ...Newton ...altered many men's outlooks, no doubt, but nothing that he said directly touched their innermost private and quintessential thoughts and feelings. But Pascal questioned those categories, touched those half conscious, or altogether unconscious habits of thought, beliefs, attitudes in terms of which the inner life, the basic components of their private worlds, presented themselves to the men of his time. ...Locke... has never been regarded as an exceptionally profound thinker; this despite his originality, his universality, his massive contribution to philosophy and politics as compared with the isolated fragments left by Pascal. It is so too with Kant... he was... one of the few authentically profound and therefore revolutionary thinkers in human history: one who... answered not merely what was generally being asked, but pierced through a layer of suppositions and assumptions which language itself embodies to habits of thought, basic frameworks in terms of which we think and act, and touched these. Nothing can compare with the experience of being made aware of the characteristics of the most intimate instruments with which one thinks and feels... of the innermost terms, the most deeply ingrained categories, with which, and not about which, one thinks..." ... "With great patience, industry, assiduity we can delve beneath the surface - novelists do this better than trained `social scientists' ... Tolstoy, Shakespeare, Dostoevsky, Kafka, Nietzsche have penetrated more deeply than John Buchan, or H.G. Wells or Bertrand Russell..."

"It is a truism to say that it is the differences and not the similarities that constitute the completeness of an act of recognition, of a historical description, of a personality - whether of an object or an individual or a culture. ... There is a Greek or German way of talking, eating, concluding treaties, engaging in commerce, dancing, gesturing, tying shoelaces, building ships, explaining the past, worshipping God, permeated by some common quality which cannot be analysed in terms of instances and general laws or effects of discoverable causes, recurrent uniformities, repetitions which allow common elements to be abstracted and sometimes experimented upon. ... We recognise these manifestations as we recognise the expressions on the faces of our friends. The interconnection of different activities which are seen to spring from, or constitute, a unique single character or style or historical situation is much more like the unity of an aesthetic whole, a symphony or a portrait; what we condemn as false or inappropriate is much more like what is false or inappropriate in a painting or a poem than in a deductive system or a scientific theory..."

"The ideal of all natural sciences is a system of propositions so general, so clear, so comprehensive, connected with each other by logical links so unambiguous and direct that the result resembles as closely as possible a deductive system... it has always been the case that the more general and logically satisfactory a system was, the less useful it was in describing the specific course of the behaviour of a particular entity in the universe... Historians, whose business is to tell us what actually happened in the world, consequently fight shy of rigid theoretical patterns into which the facts sometimes have to be fitted with a good deal of awkwardness and artificiality. ... what a historian wishes to bring out is what is specific, unique, in a given character or series of events or historical situation... The historian is concerned to paint a portrait which conveys the unique pattern of experience, and not an X-ray photograph which is capable of acting as a general symbol for all structures of a general type."

"The Sense of Reality" is the sense "acquaintance with particulars" as opposed to idealised entities. It is "the kind of semi-instinctive integration of the unaccountable infinitesimals of which individual and social life is composed... in which all kinds of skills are involved - powers of observation, knowledge of facts, above all experience - in connection with which we speak of a sense of timing, sensitiveness to the needs and capacities of human beings, political and historical genius, in short the kind of human wisdom, ability to conduct one's life or fit means to ends" which is not at all like the mere knowledge of facts. ... there is an element of improvisation, of playing by ear, of being able to size up the situation, of knowing when to leap and when to remain still, for which no formulae, no nostrums, no general recipes, no skill in identifying specific situations as instances of general laws can be a substitute."

"What I am attempting to describe is ... that capacity called imaginative insight, at its highest point genius - which historians and novelists and dramatists and ordinary persons endowed with understanding of life (at its normal level called common sense) alike display. ... It is when a historian so describes the past that we are conscious of having brought before us not merely attested facts but a revelation of a form of life, of a society presented in sufficiently rich and coherent detail, sufficiently similar to what we ourselves understand by human life or society or men's intercourse, that we can continue - extrapolate - for ourselves, go on by ourselves, understand why this man did this and that nation that, without having to have it explained in detail. ... it is then that we recognise what we have been given as being history, and not the dry rattle of mechanical formulae or a loose heap of historical bones."

The "Sense of Reality" essay walks us through some fundamental notions of history. People tend to think of history as growing in inevitable stages "although they do not, perhaps, believe in the machinery of determinism." We believe that we have methods to distinguish the real from the illusory, and here the various historical theorists provide their various models or principles: Hegel, Marx, Comte, Darwin and so on. According to this belief, to be Utopian, "to be unrealistic, not to understand history or life or the world, is to fail to grasp a particular set of laws and formulae which each school offers as the key to its explanation of why what happens must happen as it does..." And yet no attempt to provide such a key in history has worked so far. We still rely on those historical researchers "who spend their lives in painfully piecing together their knowledge from fragments of actual evidence, obeying this evidence wherever it leads them, however torturous and unfamiliar the pattern, or with no consciousness of any pattern at all." Furthermore, those who have attempted to apply general laws of a political theory, such as Marxism, comprehensively to history and on society have always failed and have hurt innumerable innocents. Life is not simple.

Successful "Political Judgement", the title of the second essay, depends on political instinct, flair and acute appreciation of the details. This is the opposite of the belief of eighteenth and nineteenth century dogmatic thinkers that universal laws, patterns and methods were the key to governing. To some extent, everyone has to integrate "the fleeting, broken infinitely various wisps and fragments that make up life at any level ... without stopping to analyse how he does what he does... Everyone must do it, but Bismarck does it over a much larger field, against a wider horizon of possible courses of action and with far greater power - to a degree, in fact, which is quite correctly described as genius." One can imagine what Berlin would say of the modern phenomena of government by fear of tabloids or government by opinion polls.

The point about "Philosophy and Government Repression", the third essay, is that real, "first-rate" philosophers necessarily make radical reassessments of life in the context of the specific society in which they live and so governments, fearing change, naturally try to repress them. The business of State control "is to preserve the status quo - to guarantee some established situation...." and to protect prevailing interests. "The principle function of philosophy is to break through, liberate, upset. ... Philosophers are necessarily subversive." Although mild in appearance, the philosopher is likely to be more destructive and revolutionary than those in society who make far more noise. Contrary to what eighteenth century thinkers believed, "we have learned that not all good things [such as freedom, order, justice, virtue, equality, pursuit of happiness] are compatible with one another; and that if we seek them, we seek them for their own sakes and not because they form a part of some imaginary harmony which a baseless optimist idealism has led us to expect and the attempts to introduce which into the world have already caused it so much needless suffering and frustration."

Philosophy is an attempt "to find ways of thinking and talking which, by revealing similarities hitherto unnoticed, and differences hitherto unremarked... cause a transformation of outlook sufficient to alter radically attitudes and ways of thought and speech, and in this way solve or dissolve problems, redistribute subjects, reformulate and reclassify relationships between objects, and transform our vision of the world. This, as in the analogous case of the arts, is something which can be performed only within and for each generations separately, for the vision of one generation must always, if formulated in words, frozen into techniques, established as an orthodoxy, become a prison-house for the next or next but one; and therefore no `progress' in the precise sense can be expected; each generation requires its own... new insights, its own self-liberation, its own powerful men of genius to transfigure its vision..." That is why, in most professions, including historians, one can be second rate or third rate and yet still make a positive contribution, but a second-rate philosopher continues with old techniques, adds to the old orthodoxy and thereby obstructs progress. "... all enemies of freedom automatically round upon intellectuals." Any attempt to suppress the freedom of philosophers "is a genuine suppression of a basic interest and need and craving of human beings. That is why periods of conformity ... are the blankest patches in the history of human thought."

Not Without Peril: 150 Years Of Misadventure On The Presidential Range Of New Hampshire, by Nicholas Howe

Among the most dangerous mountains in the world, Mount Washington has challenged adventurers for centuries with its severe weather. From the days when gentlefolk ascended the heights in hoop skirts and wool suits to today's high-tech assaults on wintry summits, this book offers extensive and intimate profiles of people who found trouble on New Hampshire's Presidential Range, from the nineteenth century through present day. Veteran journalist Nicholas Howe draws on his investigative skills and familiarity with the mountains of his childhood to create this gripping collection. The result is a compelling story about our changing relationship with the mountains we love and the risks they pose. This Tenth Anniversary Edition includes a new afterword by Nicholas Howe, with commentary on how our relationship with the Presidential Range has evolved over the last decade.

Amazon.com Review
Like a piece of granite chipped off a Presidential peak, veteran journalist Nicholas Howe's assessment of misadventure in New Hampshire's rugged mountains has a crisp, puritanical feel that fairly rasps New England. Take his description of the near-vertical (and now well-skied) slope that nearly killed Max Engelhart in 1926: "Tuckerman Ravine is a sort of twin to Huntington Ravine, a left-hand punch into the side of Mount Washington by the same primordial giant that made Huntington with his right." Underlying Not Without Peril is the not-so-subtle message that the Presidential Range, topping out at just over 6,000 feet, is as uncompromising as any other mountain range. After all, these mountains--named for Washington, Lincoln, Madison--are home to some of the most vicious weather recorded on the planet. Howe makes no judgment about those whose misfortunes he chronicles; there are tender moments that manage to stay faithful to a crusty Yankee sensibility, as in the tale of Lizzie Bourne, who died in a snowstorm while huddled in a makeshift lean-to. Howe quotes her uncle George: "She was dead--had uttered no complaint, expressed no regret or fear, but passed silently away." Such sober tales, scrupulously researched, tell the history of a mountain range and its climbers, some of whom are immortalized for their ill-fated treks. It's a gritty read, a touch morbid, but more than compensated for by sharp writing and compelling drama. --Tipton Blish

From Kirkus Reviews
A catalog of death in the New England mountains. Although not high by world standards, New Hampshires Mount Washington is home to howling winds and monstrously cold temperatures, often the coldest in the Lower 48. For years, mountaineer and freelance journalist Howe has been haunting the mountain and nearby summits of the Presidential Range, a place where furious storms, hypothermia, and occasional bears take their toll on human visitors at all seasons. Howe catalogs the errors of the unfortunate victimsand silly mistakes which seem always to come into play whenever Americans head outside, whether the date is 1849 or 1994. (The most common of them, Howes evidence suggests, is the simple omission of appropriate cold-weather gear, for although the summertime temperature may approach 90 at Mount Washingtons base, the wind chill may take it down to freezing at the peak.) Few of Howes pointed tales end happily. Some of his protagonists slip easily into death, having made some misjudgment or another; others wander around for days in the woods, running from lightning and wild animals in scenes that would fit right into a sequel to The Blair Witch Project, before meeting their unhappy fate; a few others even make it off the mountain alive, but minus toes and fingers. Since there are only so many ways to die on a mountainsideyou can fall, freeze, or get munchedthe narrative tends to be repetitious, and a little judicious paring would have been welcome. Still, all these deaths lead up to a well-taken moral: It is not so much that Mount Washington is a killer, but that people approaching it need to take better care than many of them do. Fans of outdoor disaster and unpleasantry, as well as collectors of New England mountain lore, will find Howe a generally satisfying guide to New Hampshires dark side. -- Copyright ©2000, Kirkus Associates, LP. Review
First published 14 years ago, Not Without Peril has quickly risen amongst the ranks of outdoor books and is clearly deserving the title of an outdoor classic. Combining painstaking historical research with his own intimate knowledge of New Hampshire’s White Mountains, Nicholas Howe recounts the struggles, deaths, and near escapes of hikers on Mount Washington. Howe gives us more than just facts of each accident, but he goes deeper, placing the accidents in the historical context of the times, including the period’s clothing and equipment, and providing a more complete understanding of the background and personalities of the people involved. Stories about the mountains that I love and paths that I have walked.
By Sydney O. Lavigne
Since I grew up around the people and in the mountains this is of primary interest for me. For those who are less experienced and are interested this is a great book. Not just the stories but the people involved. Some of the people mentioned here were my fathers contemporaries and I earned my love of the mountains and the forests from them. There are fewer of that kind of clear thinking and courageous folks now but, this book is a good way to get a sense of what they were like.

Great Read For Anyone That Knows The White Mountains
By John Thomas
I have lived in New England all my life and love the White Mountains in New Hampshire. Not only is the Mt. Washington valley breath taking in its beauty, but it is also home to some of the most inhospitable weather on earth. I hiked there extensively in my younger days, but never tackled the roughest of the trails that really were dangerous. But I did hike there in winter in some of the harshest conditions imaginable. And I really enjoyed immensely this book that relentlessly tells it like it is as to some of the most successful excursions, and a vast array of some of the most deadly and stupidest. There is something truly awesome to read about the successes and tragedies of some place that you yourself have experienced and survived. I couldn't put it down and plan on reading it again and again. Even if you have never even heard of the Presidential range in New Hampshire, the author does a terrific job of relating the story of the unfortunates with good research and a true knack for telling a tale without preaching. Oh make no mistake about it, anyone that has hiked the mountains there has found themselves shaking their heads at the foolishness of some that have never returned, or were found dead because of lack of experience or some other misfortune of not making the smartest decisions to be sure. But it also doesn't dwell on the tragedies with constant advice of what they did wrong and what we should learn from it. It truly just tells it like it is, and does it very well. Most enjoyable, and highly recommended... : )

scared straight
By Jon Spencer
I read this book because we will soon be setting out in the dead of winter to climb Mt Washington. For me, this book serves two purposes. First, the book provides a significant amount of anecdotal data on the topology of the mountain, its features and its trails. But more importantly, it brings to the gut the extreme conditions and serious dangers that can be encountered while on the mountain. Experienced and prudent climbers understand that living to summit another day is much better than risking death just to prove how manly (or womanly) you are. This book presents in a well written manner the folly of failing to recognize deteriorating conditions and not turning around. My respect for the mountain is certainly greater than it might have been before reading the well researched and well written book. Aside from this, the stories themselves are fascinating.
