Queen Victoria's First Prime Minister

Melbourne's life story is simply amazing. From his outrageously popular mother (a Whig noblewoman whose multitude of sons each had different--perhaps royal--fathers) and crazily intense wife, Caroline Lamb (a woman who once bit a chunk out of a wine glass when she spied her lover speaking to another woman) to Melbourne's "sexual rivalry" with that poetical superstar of the nineteenth-century, Lord Byron ("mad, bad, and dangerous to know") to, yes, a political career that shone brightly on the world stage (the city of Melbourne, Australia is named for him) this man was the first Prime Minister of Victoria's long reign, and in some ways the one with whom she was closest. The tidbits of Melbourne's personal life and the (ahem) affairs of those around him are here in pleasing detail, but there is no skimping on his political career, or on the world of his times. I found this to be an enjoyable biography of a remarkable man who had the good fortune to dwell in an interesting period and know most of the great figures (of which he was certainly one) of his age.

A prime minister more interesting than significant

Not one of the UK's great prime ministers, Melbourne was a complex character who was fortunate enough to be in office while Britain did not face any serious foreign or domestic crises. While brilliant and hard working (if for no other reason than he hated to be bored), he instinctively avoided confrontations and change, both in politics and in his social life. He was the victim of a disastrous marriage, which left him emotionally crippled although he was able to form a deep and affectionate tie to a very young Queen Victoria when she ascended to the throne. A Whig with deep roots, he believed that there was nothing that couldn't be solved with a good dinner, and he would dine with anyone who didn't shout at the table. I'm giving this thoughtful and enjoyable biography only 4 stars because of the author's annoying habit of keeping long passages in French and it's lack of illustrations. Still worth reading however.

A truly in depth showing of Melbourne's character

Truly enjoyed this book since I am a fan of all Melbourne history. Really surprised at his impassiveness of critical issues that needed attention as a member of parliament, and later while Prime Minister.
I think there were lots of deep issues going on within him. Probably scarred by his marriage, yet we all have to get over it and keep going through life. I see a man that was probably spoiled, selfish, led a privileged life and at times seemed lazy, complacent and enjoyed having someone else(especially his family) making his decisions. His Mother, I am sure, had great effect on him from childhood.
A brilliant, educated mind with all kinds of opportunity, if applied while a young man, he probably could have accomplished all sooner.
The Author did a superb job.

Enduringly Successful Firms Must Be Like Caring, Helpful Friends

Bryan Kramer struck a chord when he first spoke on stage about the vital need for companies to recognize that it always comes down to a human to human connection for companies to survive and thrive and, in the insights in these video excerpts from his interviews with business thought leaders vividly demonstrates that this notion is spreading. Companies must clearly articulate and demonstrate what they stand for and prove it in how they engage with people inside and outside the firm.

Kramer says, "Near mass adoption of social media has put a magnifying glass on business. It used to be that brands sell more by pushing out a one-way conversation to their market. But now that social has enables countless global and public conversations, most brands are still struggling to express their distinctive voice and in figuring out how to engage in conversations with their key stakeholders instead of talking at them. In fact, many so-called social conversations are still thinly disguised sales pitches."

Companies are feeling three overlapping kinds of social fear, according to Kramer:

" • Fear of not using social media so they haphazardly jump in without a plan
or employees guidelines and rules.

• Fear of saying something wrong and getting criticizes so they don’t take part at all.

• Fear of candid feedback so they stick with one-way 'conversations' when they use social channels."

Also, he wrote, "I recently got to interview Jonathan Becher, CMO of SAP, on the topic of Social Business. He believes that Marketing has always been the glue in a company. But future marketing and future PR are two sides of the same coin. 'Social forces companies to break down internal barriers. If you think of social as a shouting platform, then you can go onto your platforms and send it out and you’re done,' said Becher.
The businesses that have embraced social as a positive channel to engage in conversations with both employees and customers – what we call social business – are really winning. But it takes a lot of training, boundary setting and an open mind. Not many brands have that yet in their leadership.

Even if you aren't involved in marketing, this book has relevance because it shows how each of us has a greater opportunity now, to co-create our life's work with others by taking what Kramer calls a H2H approach in our interactions with others, as individuals, and for our organizations.

Kramer is out to start a movement, it seems, and perhaps his four-part credo for creating your own "Digital Body Language" will become an integral part of that path:

"1. Think it through. Whether it’s a blog or a Tweet, you need to visualize how what you share will play out, and whether it meets your objectives.

2. Skip to the last page first. In other words, know the end as well as the beginning when you plan your strategy. You don’t want to lead your audience down a path that just starts meandering aimlessly—they’ll likely not stick with you.

3. Slow down. When you give yourself time to reflect on what you’re creating, you’ll enter your audience’s world—and then you’ll deliver a message that will resonate.

4. Get out of your head. Ask someone on your staff, a friend, a colleague, 'Does this make sense to you?'” before you post something. Sometimes that means sharing your own context along with your message.

Insights on H2H, the next level of social marketing.

Bryan Kramer is a thought leader in social marketing. He does a great job in this book of showing why he is on the cutting edge in this quickly changing field, and why what he has dubbed H2H is the next step. There is a lot here for social marketers, for sure, but also for everyone in their personal and business lives. H2H is a concept for all of us, in almost any situation. Taking advantage of the e-book technology, his insights are reinforced with excellent but all-too-short video clips taken from recent interviews with other authors and leaders in the field. I really liked the discussion on "delightful disruption," which of course is the secret to progress and success in a lot of areas.

In a phrase from the book itself, Bryan Kramer's ideas definitely are "crowd-worthy," and are sure to spark future success in the use of social media.

Bought this for my son. Really disappointed that it ended less than halfway through the movie events. Is there a part two? Should be labeled as less-than-full version.

It was ok, just ok

It was an useful book, but it seems overpriced. There are 241 pages, but the material is hardly dense and then there are photographs. All the expense seems to have gone in making a glossy book on expensive paper with high quality binding. But the content itself is not very dense. And it is most certainly not a language learning book. But I was thinking that maybe it will help understand the challenges that comes with learning a new language.

So I was interested in knowing about MM Lee's language learning experience and I could say my curiosity was quenched despite the shortcomings of the book. But I had to pay the price. And what did I learn for $49 plus shipping? It is very tough to learn mandarin especially for adults plus it is very easy to forget unless you are living in a Chinese speaking environment. Apparently even the MM's grandkids do not take to it. He speaks about Beligians and Canadians having problems with bilingualism. I mean without explicitly saying it, he seems to have indicated that English is the language of the future.

English is the language of the workplace in Singapore. I know that English is being taught in Chinese schools too nowadays. Imagine someone trying to learn Mandarin getting a copy of this book? What is he or she to understand? Learn enough Mandarin to teach Mandarin speakers English? That seems to be the case. The brutal honesty gets to you.

Reference for Chinese Teacher of the Western World

There are many foreigners learning Chinese nowadays, including the English speaking people in the US or Europe.

This book provides some tips in learning Chinese for the English native speaker, mainly on listening and speaking. For writing, you'd better look for other books on the topic.

For Chinese Teacher in the West, you could know what problems English speaker may encounter and how they deal with it. You may think of some solution out of this which should be useful in your future teaching.

Since Lee Kuan Yew is also a Chinese and have been exposed to Chinese environment in Singapore, his learning experience may be somehow different from those English speaker in the West, especially the kids.

The author of Baseball in April (1990) offers 13 more domestic reversals of fortune. Javier snaps a picture of Angel in the shower and threatens ``Blackmail''; Alex's ``First Job'' turns into disaster when he accidentally sets a neighbor's fence afire; Robert almost botches his one line in ``The School Play'' (about the Donner party); Jose challenges new classmate Estela to a game of racquetball--which he's never played--and is wiped out; flying is not the peak experience Araceli expects when she signs up for a ``Nickel-a-Pound Plane Ride,'' etc. As always, Soto shows that the concerns and triumphs of Latino children are no different from anyone's, and though he respects his characters, their misadventures are treated with a light touch--vignettes rather than life-changing incidents. A great book told from a refreshingly different perspective

It is so very difficult to find books that Latino youth can relate to. The short stories in this book give the reader a glimpse into life in immigrant communities without harping on problems. I brought a copy of this book into my sixth grade class last year and it changed many of my students' perspectives on reading. Many of them read a chapter book for the first time in their lives, and continued reading for pleasure for the rest of the year. I will never forget the looks of surprise on their faces when I read a chapter out loud. They were in shock that there were books in which the characters talked like their families and dealt with subject matter they encountered in their lives. They gobbled up (and fought over) every Gary Soto book I brought into the classroom from then on, and eventually became interested in reading a wide variety of books. Their end of year exam scores improved dramatically, and I believe that at least some of this improvement was because of this book.

While there are some good children's books that touch on the experiences of immigrants and Chicanos, they usually just include characters named "Pedro" and toss in a few Spanish words. By unapologetically including Chicano slang and themes common in immigrant communities, this book validates the existence of young Latinos/Chicanos/Mexicanos and gives them a reason to WANT to read. While it does not fill it completely, it begins to fill a tremendous gap that exists in children's literature. Every 5th grade+ literature teacher working with Latino children should definitely have at least one copy in their classroom libraries. Even non-Latinos should enjoy Soto's entertaining method of telling stories.

Recently, I gained the privilege to read a book that was written by Gary Soto. The book that I read was entitled, Local News. Throughout this short book, Gary describes 11 different situations that are common for teenagers growing up in Hispanic neighborhoods. I will give a brief, yet detailed description of five of my favorite stories.
Chapter #1: Blackmail Blackmail was about a dispute between two teenage brothers. The setting takes place in a primarily Hispanic neighborhood located in California. Angel, who was the younger brother, found himself being picked on by his older brother named Javier. (Javier's nickname was Weasel) One day while Angel was taking a shower, Weasel snuck into the bathroom and took a picture of Angel, who obviously was bare-naked. Weasel threatened to show the picture to all of the girls at school if he did not give him $20.00. Angel, who was extremely angry yelled, `You punk, I'm going to get you!' His threat was worthless though. His older brother had absolutely no fear of him. Angel was very nervous because he didn't have $20.00 to give him, nor would he want to waste that much money on such a stupid joke. Finally, when Weasel realized that Angel wasn't capable of paying the ransom, he forced him to do his chores instead. Although Angel resented doing his brother's chores, he accepted the job. In the end, Weasel began to feel sorry for his younger brother and gave him the picture back.
Chapter #3: First Job
This chapter was about a 13-year-old boy named Alex. The setting took place on a hot summer day. Alex, who was the main character, had an older brother and sister and one younger brother. Both of his older siblings had jobs and were making money, which made Alex jealous. One day, Alex was asked to rake and burn some leaves for a woman named Mrs. Martinez. She offered him one dollar therefore he accepted the job. After Alex was finished raking the leaves in a pile, he lit a match and started the pile on fire. Just then, he realized that he had left his younger brother alone at home. Therefore, he decided to run home to make sure he was content. While he was away from the fire, it spread to Mrs. Martinez's deck. This event added some suspense to the story. When Alex returned to her house, a neighbor was already there and had the fire under control. Due to the fire, Mrs. Martinez was very angry and refused to pay Alex for the job. Unfortunately, that was Alex's first experience of having a job.
Chapter #4: El radio This chapter was about two teenage girls who had a small party together. The event took place in Patricia's home on a Friday night; her parents were not home. The other character, who was named Melinda, came over to listen to the radio with Patricia. As the two girls listened to the radio, they started to act crazy. Consequently, they spilled a bucket of popcorn and made a mess. When their parents returned home they were angry with the two girls. Finally, the girls were able to cheer up their parents by doing something very unique. You will have to read the story to discover what happened. This chapter possessed an exiting theme because it described the friendship of two girls.
Chapter #5: Push-up Push-up was the name of Carmen's new kitten. Carmen was a young girl living in a Spanish-American community. Her new kitten was very cute and was always receiving the family's attention. That made their other cat jealous. Therefore, it always fought with Push-up. One day, Carmen brought her kitten to school with her to protect him from the other cat. I thought that was an extremely risky idea. Therefore, I feel that this story contained a high level of suspense. When she and her kitten arrived at school, she secretly placed it in the ball container. Carmen felt bad for the kitten and said, `It will be ok, it is for your own good.' As the day passed by, Carmen struggled keeping the kitten a secret. In order to learn what happened to her and her cat, I suggest that you read this story.
Chapter #10: Nickel-A-Pound Plane Ride The main character of this story was Araceli. Araceli was a twelve-year-old with skin the color of brown sugar. Her dream was to fly in an airplane. One day, she finally got her chance. When she climbed into the plane's passenger area, she noticed that the engine was very loud. Therefore, she became a little nervous. As the plane began to take off, she became even more nervous when it rocked back and forth. She gradually began to feel unsafe. After the ride was over, she realized that flying was not all that she hoped it would be. The theme of this story was sad. The setting was on a cold rainy day, which gave the story a gloomy effect. When Araceli realized that she did not like flying, I was disappointed because it was her dream to fly.
After reading Local News by Gary Soto, I now have a better understanding of what a typical teenager's life was like in Spanish-American communities. Although this book was simple and easy to read, I feel that I have benefited from reading it because Gary Soto did an outstanding job of displaying each character's styles and traits in their everyday environment. If you are interested in learning about Spanish-American communities, I recommend reading this book.

The book "local news": collection of stories," By Gary Soto was a very interesting book the story is like a Mexican language, but also English book.
The background is about a young family who argues and shared some love. The theme of the story takes place in the house, park, and different holidays. The biggest problem was that the two sons were always fighting and most of the time they did get along.
When you read every chapter of "local news" you will imagine pictures about the book.
If you love reading on family and adventure you will enjoy every chapter.
